Jules-Émile Alaux

Jules-Émile Alaux (11 January 1828 – 3 November 1903) was a French philosopher and professor.

Biography

Alaux was born at Lavaur in the Tarn department. He worked as a lycee teacher in Paris, Nice, Neuchâtel and Algiers. He was an independent thinker, with a zeal for the rejuvenation of philosophy and the transformation of religion into a living cultural force. His writings include La Raison (1860), La Religion Progressive (1869), De la Métaphysique Considérée comme Science (1879), Problème Religieux du XIXe Siècle (1890), Philosophie Morale et Politique (1894) and Théorie de l'Âme Humaine (1895). Alaux also wrote aesthetic works and poetry.

He died in Bourg-la-Reine.
