History

This university is popular in India, it is awarded as the "BEST PRIVATE UNIVERSITY" in South India[2] and there are nearly 600 research scholars so far in the university, it was rated with 'A' GRADE University in India. The college was established in 1980 at Vaddeswaram by the late Sri Koneru Lakshmaiah and Sri K. Satyanarayana. Sri K. Lakshmaiah, who graduated from BMS College of Engineering, Bangalore, came up with the idea of establishing an engineering college in order to rectify the local scarcity of engineers.

One of the main objectives of establishing the institute was to develop facilities of education in a variety of specialised engineering and technological sciences. Establishing adequate facilities for postgraduate studies and research was a focal point for the founding years. The institute has recorded 100% placements for the past eight consecutive years. Affiliated to Acharya Nagarjuna University, Guntur, the college was granted autonomy in 2006. It has acquired the status of deemed university in 2009,[3] and is now known as Koneru Lakshmaiah Education Foundation.[4]

Departments

The college was started with four streams in 1980, but now offers nine programmes in the undergraduate courses and five programmes in post-graduate courses. KLU was the first engineering college in Andhra Pradesh to start an Industrial and Production Engineering branch in undergraduate courses and to have an NBA accreditation for Biotechnology. It has a plinth area of 38,045 square metres (409,510 sq ft). The college has three computer centres catering to the computing needs of the students and staff.

Student life

Cultural activities such as dancing, singing and drama feature to a lesser extent in the life of a KLU student. The annual cultural festival, Surabhi, is held in February. It is a two-day event, featuring games, exhibitions, competitions and musical concerts.

These college festivals are organised, financially managed and conducted entirely by the students of University. All these festivals and organisations are sponsored by private enterprises.

Apart from cultural and technological activities, students actively involve in various 'social outreach' activities with the help of generous funding provided by Centre for Extension Activities of K L University.

The university houses several hobby clubs and forums like Women's forum, LINUX groups etc.

The Freshman Engineering Department helps first-year undergraduate students adapt to the requirements of technical education. The Institute has a Communication and Soft Skills (CSS) Department, headed by professors and having more than twenty faculty members.

The Institute offers bridge courses to the students coming from disadvantaged backgrounds to make them competent to take up the courses on a par with other students. The Institute is recognized as a Scientific and Industrial Research Organization (SIRO) by DSIR, Government of India for its research environment.

Administration

Every department has 24 committees which administer activities and students are members of these committees. There is an advisory board in every school with academicians from IITs and foreign universities and eminent personalities from industry.
