Kirsten Gillibrand is the junior U.S. Senator from New York, currently running for president in 2020.

Gillibrand announced the formation of an exploratory committee to consider running for the Democratic nomination in the 2020 United States presidential election on January 15, 2019 in an appearance on The Late Show with Stephen Colbert.[3] The announcement was made on the same day that paperwork establishing the Gillibrand 2020 Exploratory Committee was filed with the Federal Election Commission.[4]

In a Twitter video post on March 17, Gillibrand announced that she was officially running for president.[5]

Gillibrand's position on gun control changed after the Sandy Hook Elementary School shooting. Her NRA grading changed from A to F.[6][7] She has tried to close the "Charleston loophole" which automatically clears someone to purchase a firearm if their background check takes longer than three days.[8] [9] She says mass shootings are an emergency,[10] rather than the Southern Border.[11][12] She has spoken out against the NRA directly.[13][14]

Gillibrand signed a bill that, if passed, would remove cannabis from the Controlled Substances Act.[15]

In June 2015 Gillibrand was one of 33 senators who signed a letter criticizing the Obama administration's immigration detention policies, saying the practice is "unacceptable and goes against our most fundamental values".[16][17][18]

Although Gillibrand is a political opponent of President Donald Trump, she said the following regarding the Singapore Summit,<templatestyles src="Template:Blockquote/styles.css" />

I’m very grateful that ... Trump is trying diplomacy as oppose[d] to military action because that's was what his first take was. So, I am grateful that he is making the effort to try diplomacy and to try to bring people together towards a peaceful resolution[14]

In a TV interview, she backed the Green New Deal,[19]

…Severe weather is the greatest threat to humanity we have…When severe weather hits, people die. It destroys communities...The first thing is to invest in our green energies, wind, solar, geothermal, Hydropower, nuclear, and biofuels. We were the inventors of solar panels and wind. We let that manufacturing go to China because we did not guarantee the tax benefits to make it work here. So, why not make a commitment? Not only to these new energies but to the job training. Second, infrastructure… Last, clean air and clean water… no child should have to drink water out of a faucet that is tainted … It is an ambition for the future that we should all get behind[20]
