Kurchatovsky District (Russian: Курча́товский райо́н) is an administrative[1] and municipal[3] district (raion), one of the twenty-eight in Kursk Oblast, Russia. It is located in the center of the oblast. The area of the district is 678 square kilometers (262 sq mi).[citation needed] Its administrative center is the town of Kurchatov (which is not administratively a part of the district).[1] Population: 18,021 (2010 Census);[4] 19,714 (2002 Census);[7] 25,224 (1989 Census).[8]

Administrative and municipal status

Within the framework of administrative divisions, Kurchatovsky District is one of the twenty-eight in the oblast.[1] The town of Kurchatov serves as its administrative center, despite being incorporated separately as a town of oblast significance—an administrative unit with the status equal to that of the districts.[1]

As a municipal division, the district is incorporated as Kurchatovsky Municipal District.[3] The town of oblast significance of Kurchatov is incorporated separately from the district as Kurchatov Urban Okrug.[3]
