Lifeboat economics can be used as a reference to Garrett Hardin's Lifeboat Ethics.[1]

Lifeboat Ethics was coined by Ken McCarthy.[citation needed]

Lifeboat economics refers to a situation in which there is a scarcity of resources and there is a risk of survival. The idea, as presented by Garrett Hardin, is that of a group of 50 individuals are on a lifeboat, amongst a sea of people who are drowning. The lifeboat can hold another ten individuals. With each additional individual saved from the water, those on the raft risk their own safety (increased chance of tipping, lower Factor of safety).[1]

Uses

Jacqueline Rorabeck Kasun uses the term in the book The War Against Population: The Economics and Ideology of World Population, entitling the second chapter Scarcity or Lifeboat economics.[2]
