Lua error in package.lua at line 80: module 'strict' not found. The following is a list of NCAA Division I universities in the United States (listed alphabetically by state) and their current athletic director. This list only includes schools playing Division I football or men's basketball. Schools are alphabetized by commonly used short name, regardless of their official name. The abbreviation "St.", for "Saint", is alphabetized as if it were spelled out.

By state

FBS
FCS (scholarship)
FCS (non-scholarship)
Non-football

Notes:

  • For the purposes of this list, schools that have announced that they are transitioning to FBS are included as FBS schools and indicated in italics. Currently, one school is in the transition process—Charlotte, which launched a football program in 2013 at the FCS level and joined the football league of Conference USA, its all-sports conference, in 2015. It will become a full FBS member in 2016. Coastal Carolina will start an FBS transition in 2016.
  • The terms "scholarship" and "non-scholarship" specifically refer to the football programs of FCS schools. The following FCS programs are non-scholarship:
    • All eight members of the Ivy League, which prohibits the awarding of athletic scholarships in any sport.
    • All 11 members of the Pioneer Football League, a football-only conference whose members all offer scholarships in other sports but choose not to take on the expense of a scholarship football program.
    • Georgetown, a football-only member of the Patriot League. When that conference began allowing its members to award football scholarships with the 2013 recruiting class, Georgetown was the only member that chose to remain non-scholarship. (Note that two football-playing full members of the conference, Army and Navy, have FBS football programs, with all of their students—whether or not they are varsity athletes—receiving full scholarships paid for by the U.S. government.)

  11. Uniquely in NCAA Division I, Vanderbilt does not have a separate athletic department. In 2003, Vanderbilt's chancellor at the time, Gordon Gee, folded the athletic department into the school's Division of Student Life and University Affairs, effectively treating it as any other student organization.
