First Attempts at Union

While there were occasional attempts for a union, such as the Council of Florence in 1434, during this period there was no Syrian Catholic Church separate from the Syriac Orthodox Church.

From 1662 to 1702 a separate Syriac Catholic hierarchy existed, based in Aleppo:

Ignatius Michael III Jarweh established a union with Rome and brought with him much of his congregation creating a line of Syriac Catholic Patriarchs of Antioch separate from the Syriac Orthodox Church.
