List of breweries in Louisiana
Breweries in Louisiana produce a wide range of beers in different styles that are marketed locally, regionally, and nationally. Brewing companies vary widely in the volume and variety of beer produced, from small nanobreweries to microbreweries to massive multinational conglomerate macrobreweries.
In 2014, Louisiana's 37 breweries and brewpubs, and 66 distributors, and hundreds of retailers employed more than 15,000 people directly, and more than 10,000 others in related industries.[1] Including people directly employed in brewing, as well as those who supply Louisiana's breweries with everything from ingredients to machinery, the total business and personal tax revenue generated by Louisiana's breweries and related industries was more than $380 million.[1] Consumer purchases of Louisiana's brewery products generated more than $150 million in additional tax revenue.[1] In 2014, according to the Brewers Association, Louisiana ranked 36th (out of 51 including the Washington, D.C.) in the number of craft breweries per capita with 15.[2]
For context, at the end of 2013 there were 2,822 breweries in the United States, including 2,768 craft breweries subdivided into 1,237 brewpubs, 1,412 microbreweries and 119 regional craft breweries.[3] In that same year, according to the Beer Institute, the brewing industry employed around 43,000 Americans in brewing and distribution and had a combined economic impact of more than $246 billion.[4]
History
The first manufacturing establishment in the city of New Orleans was a brewery built by Pierre Dreux called La Brassiere in January 1723. In 1852 Louis and Samuel Fasnacht purchased some property on Poeyfarre St and started Fasnacht Brewery. They sold the brewery in 1865 to Erath and Company Brewery . New Orleans Brewing Co.(1890) was founded out of a six brewery merger at the site of Louisiana Brewing Co.(1885) located at Jackson Ave. & Tchoupitoulas St., brands included: Eagle Beer, Double Eagle Ale, and 4-X Beer. Jax Brewery opened in 1891 on Decatur St., Columbia Brewing (1894) on Elysian Fields, National Brewing Co., Dixie Beer (1907), Union Brewing Co. (1912) on N.Robertson, Regal made at American Brewing Co. on Bienville St., and Falstaff (1936). The next chapter of Brewing in Louisiana began in 1986 with the opening of Abita Brewing Co. In recent years other craft breweries have opened and the brewing culture is developing.

- Bayou Teche Brewery – Arnaudville, taproom, opened in 2010
- Cajun Brewing[5] – Lafayette, opened in 2015
- Chafunkta Brewing Company[6] – Mandeville, founded in 2011
- Courtyard Brewery[7] – New Orleans, tap room, opened in 2015
- Covington Brewhouse – Covington, taproom, founded as Heiner Brau Brewery in 2005, renamed Covington Brewhouse in 2012
- Crescent City Brewhouse[8] – New Orleans, brewpub, opened in 1991
- Dixie Brewing Company – New Orleans; founded in 1907; the brewery was damaged by Hurricane Katrina in 2005; since then the beer has been contract brewed at other locations[9]
- Gnarly Barley Brewing Company[10] – Hammond, opened in 2014
- Gordon Biersch Brewing Company – a national chain with several dozen brewpubs, including one in New Orleans
- Great Raft Brewing – Shreveport, taproom, opened in 2013
- New Orleans Lager and Ale Brewing Company (NOLA) – New Orleans, taproom, opened in 2009
- Old Rail Brewing Company[11] – Mandeville, brewpub, opened in 2013
- Parish Brewing Company[12] – Broussard, taproom, opened in 2008
- Tin Roof Brewing Company[13] – Baton Rouge, taproom, opened in 2010
Closed breweries
- Jackson Brewery – New Orleans, opened in 1891, closed in 1974; the brewery building now contains shops and restaurants
