The following is a list of publicly traded companies having the greatest market capitalization. This list is based on the Financial Times Global 500 rankings. The list of non-public companies by estimated market value is attached for comparison.

Market capitalization is calculated from the share price (as recorded on selected day) multiplied by the number of shares issued. Figures are converted into USD millions (using rate from selected day) to allow for comparison. Only companies with free float at least 15% are included, value of unlisted stock classes is excluded. Investment companies are not included in the list.[1]

30 December 1999 Microsoft 618.9 879 Microsoft reached an intraday high share price of $119.94 in December 1999.[2] With 5,160,024,593 outstanding shares,[3] it had a market capitalization of $618.9 billion.
5 November 2007 Petrochina 1000 1141 On 5 November 2007, A shares of Petrochina on the first day of trading after its IPO on Shanghai Stock Exchange skyrocketed from the IPO price of 16.7 RMB to 43.96 RMB by the close (the opening price was even 48.6 RMB). That gave a market capitalization of about $1 trillion.[4] Only 4 billion A shares were floated during the IPO, another 158 billion A shares were still held by China National Petroleum Corporation. 21 billion H Shares were already floated on the Hong Kong Stock Exchange.[5] However market capitalization based on H-shares never reached $500 billion.[6]
February 2015 Apple Inc. 775 775 Apple had reached its record high market capitalization value of $775 billion during February of 2015.[7]
