Matthew Hayden has the second highest number of international centuries for Australia.

Matthew Hayden is a former Australian cricketer and opening batsman who scored centuries (100 or more runs) in Test matches and One Day International (ODI) matches organised by the International Cricket Council (ICC). He was described by Yahoo! Cricket as "a strong-built left-hander, an intimidating personality and [possessing] an aggressive attitude", "[with] all the ingredients" needed for success.[1] Hayden scored 8,625 runs in Tests and 6,133 runs in ODIs, accruing 40 centuries.[1] He was named one of the Indian Cricket Cricketers of the Year in 2001, and Wisden Cricketers of the Year two years later.[2][3] Hayden was chosen as the "ICC ODI Cricketer of the Year" for his accomplishments with the bat in 2007.[4][5]

Hayden made his Test debut against South Africa in March 1994.[6] His first century came three years later against the West Indies at the Adelaide Oval when he scored 125.[7] It took another four years to score his second international century. Hayden scored centuries against all the Test cricket playing nations, except Bangladesh.[7] His highest score of 380 came against Zimbabwe at the WACA Ground, Perth in 2003,[6] surpassing Brian Lara's world record of 375.[8] Lara beat Hayden's total when he scored 400 not out in a match against England in April 2004.[9][N 1] Hayden scored centuries in each innings of a Test match on two different occasions.[11]

Hayden made his ODI debut in 1993.[6] He achieved his first century against India at the Indira Priyadarshini Stadium, Visakhapatnam in 2001.[12] He made ten centuries against five different opponents,[13] and was most successful against New Zealand and India, scoring four and three centuries against each of them respectively.[13] Hayden's highest score of 181 not out was against New Zealand in 2007,[12] and was an Australian record at the time.[N 2] His century against South Africa in the 2007 Cricket World Cup came off 66 balls, the quickest by an Australian to date.[15] Hayden was the leading run-scorer in the tournament, with 658 runs which included three centuries.[16][17]

Hayden played nine Twenty20 International (T20I) matches, between 2005 and 2007; he failed to score a century in any game, recording a high score of 73 not out.[18] After representing his country for over 15 years, Hayden retired from international cricket in 2009.[19] As of February 2015, he is eleventh in the list of century-makers in international cricket in all formats combined.[20]
