English fast bowler, James Anderson, has taken 21 five-wicket hauls in Test cricket and 2 five-wicket hauls in ODIs.[1]

In cricket, a five-wicket haul (also known as a "five–for" or "fifer")[2] refers to a bowler taking five or more wickets in a single innings. This is regarded as a notable achievement,[3] and as of 2015 only 42 bowlers have taken at least 15 five-wicket hauls at international level in their cricketing careers.[4] James Anderson, an English cricketer has taken 21 five-wicket hauls in international cricket.[4][5] A right-arm fast-medium bowler, Anderson has played 99 Tests and 185 One Day International (ODI) matches for his country, and has taken 380 and 261 wickets respectively.[5][6] He was honoured with the NBC Denis Compton Award for "The Most Promising Young Player" in 2002,[7] and the Wisden Cricketers' Almanack named him one of their cricketers of the year in 2009.[8] In 2013, former Pakistan captain, Wasim Akram described him as "the best bowler of this era".[9]

Anderson took a five-wicket haul on his Test debut in 2003 against Zimbabwe at the Lord's Cricket Ground;[10] he took 5 wickets for 73 runs, a match England won by an innings and 92 runs.[11] In July 2010, he took five-wicket hauls in both innings of a Test match against Pakistan at the Trent Bridge.[12] In total he took 11 wickets for 71 runs in the match, his best bowling figures in Test cricket.[5] He took another pair of five-wicket hauls at the same venue, against Australia in the first Test of the 2013 Ashes series.[13] Anderson's career-best figures for an innings are 7 wickets for 43 runs against New Zealand at the Trent Bridge, in June 2008.[14] As of 2015, he has taken 18 five-wicket hauls at seven cricket grounds, and is most successful against Australia, taking five five-wicket hauls each.[14]

Anderson made his ODI debut against Australia at the Melbourne Cricket Ground during the 2002–03 VB series, a match England lost by 89 runs.[15] His first ODI five-wicket haul came in November 2009 at the St George's Oval, against South Africa, a match England won by 7 wickets. His career best performance of 5 wickets for 23 runs in the match earned him the man of the match award.[16] Anderson has taken two five-wicket hauls in ODI cricket.[17]

Making his first Twenty20 International (T20I) appearance in 2007, Anderson has yet to take a five-wicket haul in the format as of 2014.[18] His best performance in T20I is 3 wickets for 23 runs, against the Netherlands at the Lord's Cricket Ground during the 2009 ICC World Twenty20.[19] As of 2014, he is twenty-fourth overall among all-time combined five-wicket haul takers,[4] and third in the equivalent list for England.[20]
