The three lists in this article rank buildings from around the world by usable space (volume), footprint on the ground(area), and floor space (area), respectively. The term "building" used by these lists refers to single structures that are suitable for continuous human occupancy. There are a few exceptions which include factories and warehouses.

The Aerium near Berlin is the largest uninterrupted volume in the world, with Boeing's factory in Everett, Washington, United States the largest building in the world by volume and the Aalsmeer Flower Auction Building in Aalsmeer, Netherlands the largest in area footprint, while the New Century Global Center in Chengdu is the largest building in terms of total floor area.[1] The surface area of the proposed Crystal Island complex in Moscow, Russia, is more than double that of the largest current building, though this project has been delayed by the global economic crisis.[2]
