Lucky Cement Limited has been sponsored by one of the largest business groups in Pakistan, the Yunus Brothers Group based in Karachi.

Lucky Cement has a network of over 200 dealers which enables it to dominate the local market and is Pakistan’s first company to export sizeable quantities of loose cement and is the only cement manufacturer to have its own loading and storage terminal at Karachi Port.

Products and Brands

The company is producing different variations of Ordinary Portland Cement and Sulphate Resistant Cement to meet needs of a wide range of customers. The company currently[when?] produces the following brands[4] of cement;

1. Lucky Cement (Regular) 2. Lucky Star 3. Lucky Gold 4. Lucky Sulphate Resistant Cement 5. Lucky Block Cement 6. Lucky Raj

Power Generation

The company is producing enough electricity to not only fulfil its own requirements but has also started supplying electricity to Hyderabad Electric Supply Corporation[5] and is now in the process of providing electricity to Peshawar Electric Supply Corporation which is a noteworthy achievement in the area of energy generation.

Geared to a sustainable growth, The YB Group has diversified into the power generation sector by investing into Lucky Electric Power Company Limited (LEPCL). The company is a wholly owned subsidiary of LCL Holding Limited making it an indirect subsidiary of Lucky Cement Limited. Being the largest importer of coal, Lucky Cement Limited decision of investing in 660MW coal-based power project in Karachi will create synergy amongst its existing diversified business portfolio.[6]

Alternate Fuel

Lucky Cement has shifted its focus to alternate fuel such as TDF and RDF.[7]

LCL is the pioneer of bringing evolution in corporate social responsibility via implementation of dual-fuel conversion project which has helped in energy generation from furnace oil to environment-friendly natural gas. The successful implementation of this project has enabled LCL to reduce emission of CO2 by 29,000 metric tons per annum.

LCL has undertaken another lead by shifting from coal to Tyre Derived Fuel (TDF), generated by burning shredded tyres. The company has installed TDF plant at our Karachi Plant and have also planned to introduce TDF at our PEZU Plant to replace coal.

The company is also active in other practices of alternative fuel projects for achieving sustainability of the environment, which includes: Refused Derived Fuel (RDF) that is making use of Municipal Solid Waste (MSW) and Rice Husk. Lucky Cement prides itself in transforming from a fossil-based energy to alternative-energy structure. This highlights LCL’s position in recognition of its efforts in preserving the ecosystem.

Sustainability

Lucky Cement Limited has installed the Waste Heat Recovery (WHR) project to ensure that its operations are aligned with eco-friendly practices. The design of this plant hinges on the idea of encapsulating all the wasted heat from production system and utilizing it to co-generate electricity. LCL efforts of acquiring green technology have enabled it to cater the needs of utility companies with a pro-environment approach. The company has already started supplying electricity to Hyderabad Electric Supply Corporation (HESCO).

Our Duel Fuel Project qualifies for Clean Development Mechanism (CDM) under the Kyoto Protocol through which pro-environment organizations earn Certified Emission Reduction (CER) credits. To curtail the rising fuel costs in the cement manufacturing, Lucky Cement is planning to install Waste Heat Recovery (WHR) plant at the Karachi and Pezu plant. Both these plants will produce additional 5MW of energy respectively. This will be in addition to the already running WHR projects at the premises of Karachi and Pezu plant and will not only cut down the fuel cost but will also reduce the carbon footprint of the company.

LCL has also joined hands with Government of Pakistan to support President’s Forestation Program and plans to plant trees all over the country; specifically, near its plant vicinity.

Acknowledging Lucky Cement’s efforts for a sustainable environment, National Forum for Environment and Health (NFEH) revered Lucky Cement with the Environment Excellence Award.

Sustainability Reporting

In a rare feat, Lucky Cement is the only company in Pakistan to have received an A+[8] rating by Global Reporting Initiative (GRI) of Netherlands, for its Sustainability Report for 2012.
