Lwengo District is a district in Central Uganda. It is named after Lwengo, the largest town in the district and the location of the district headquarters.
Location
Lwengo District is bordered by Sembabule District to the north, Bukomansimbi District to the northeast, Masaka District to the east, Rakai District to the south, and Lyantonde District to the west. Lwengo, the district headquarters, is located 45 kilometres (28 mi), by road, west of Masaka, the nearest large city.[1] The coordinates of the district are:00 24S, 31 25E.
Overview
Lwengo District in one of the newest districts in Uganda. Created by an Act of Parliament, the district became functional on 1 July 2010. Prior to that, it was part of Masaka District.[2] Generally, the district is rural, with limited public services. Subsistence agriculture and livestock farming are the two main economic activities in Lwengo. There is no hospital in the district.
However the district has embarked on the educational agenda and has produced academicians such as the economist Musoke N. Samuel who attained BSc(Mathematics & Economics) with a First Class Honours Degree award at Makerere University which is Uganda's leading University.
Population
The 1991 national population census estimated the district population at about 212,600. Eleven years later, the next census in 2002 put the population in the district at about 242,300. In 2012, the population of Lwengo District was estimated at approximately 267,300.[3]
