Mall of Asia Arena is an indoor arena within the SM Mall of Asia complex, in Pasay, Philippines. It has a seating capacity of 16,000[2] for sporting events, and a full house capacity of 20,000.[2] The Arena officially opened on June 16, 2012. It has retractable seats and a 2,000-capacity car park building.

The Mall of Asia Arena is the alternate venue of the Philippine Basketball Association when the Smart Araneta Coliseum is unavailable.[6][7] The Arena is also the new home of the University Athletic Association of the Philippines.[8][9]

Lady Gaga held the first concerts at the arena with her two night sold-out concert for her Born This Way Ball tour on May 21–22, 2012.[10] Several other international artists have performed at the arena, including The Script, Demi Lovato, Selena Gomez, Ariana Grande, Mariah Carey, Rihanna, Jennifer Lopez, Nicki Minaj, Alicia Keys, Zedd, Avicii, Bruno Mars, Aerosmith, Paramore, Pitbull, Jonas Brothers, Taylor Swift, Linkin Park, The Vamps, Imagine Dragons, Maroon 5, Ed Sheeran, Chris Brown, One Ok Rock, Super Junior, BTS, EXO and 5 Seconds of Summer. Madonna's Rebel Heart Tour concert last February 24–25, 2016 had the highest ticket prices of any concert in the Philippines with an average cost of ₱34,913.[11][12] Regine Velasquez was the first local artist to perform at the arena,[13] while Darren Espanto was the youngest artist to hold a solo show at the arena at age 14.[14] One Ok Rock is the first Japanese artist to headline a show in the arena, while EXO was the first Korean artist to perform in the arena for two nights.

Sports events

The Mall of Asia Arena serves as one of the playing venues of the Philippine Basketball Association (PBA), National Collegiate Athletic Association (Philippines), UAAP and the Shakey's V-League. The venue uses NBA-specification shot clocks, with a Daktronics NBA model unit that counts tenths in the final five seconds.

The PBA's B-Meg Llamados and the Talk 'N Text Tropang Texters played the first basketball game at the arena on July 7, 2012 as part of the 2012 PBA Governors Cup semifinals. The UAAP's 2012 opening game between the NU Bulldogs and UE Red Warriors on July 14, 2012 was the arena's first college basketball game. The first game of the 2012 UAAP basketball finals was played at the arena in front of 20,686 people.

The PBA's first doubleheader in the arena on October 17, 2012 was marked by a looting incident at the Meralco Bolts' locker room.[15] A day later, the arena hosted the National Collegiate Athletic Association's first game of its finals series against the San Beda Red Lions and the Letran Knights.

On March 6, 2013, the DLSU Lady Spikers became the first team in any Philippine sports to celebrate the first ever championship in the arena in front of 18,779 cheering crowd, when they won the UAAP women's volleyball championship.

The Mall of Asia Arena served as the main venue for the 2013 FIBA Asia Championship while the Ninoy Aquino Stadium was the second venue for the tournament, which was held on August 1–11, 2013.[16] It had a 19,989 attendance at the final game between the host Philippines and Iran.

The NBA played their first preseason game in Southeast Asia and in the Philippines at this arena on October 10, 2013 featuring the Houston Rockets versus the Indiana Pacers.[17]

The Manila Mavericks of the International Premier Tennis League played their home matches in the arena in the league's inaugural season. The matches were played on November 28–30, 2014.[18][19]

The UFC held their first event in Philippines on May 16, 2015 with UFC Fight Night: Edgar vs. Faber.[20][21][22]

In June 2015, the Monster Jam motorsport event performed at the arena.[23]

From June 7–12, 2016, the arena will hold a professional Dota 2 eSports tournament, known as the Manila Major 2016.[24] The Major will be hosted and produced by PGL eSports.

The Mall of Asia Arena will be one of the three main venues of the 2016 FIBA World Olympic Qualifying Tournaments for Men, which will be held in the Philippines, Italy, and Serbia on July 4–10, 2016. This will be the second FIBA tournament to be held at the arena[25][26]

On September 9, 2016, SM Mall of Asia Arena will host an official WWE Live event; the first time the sports entertainment company has held an event in the Philippines since 2009.[27]

Religious events

The Mall of Asia Arena served as the main venue for the Encounter with the Families event, led by Pope Francis during his papal visit to the Philippines on January 16, 2015. The event was a dialogue between Pope Francis and an audience of families.[28][29]

On April 10, 2015, Hillsong No Other Name Tour Live In Manila Praise & Worship Concert was held at MOA Arena will more than 20,000 Filipino worshipers who watched and attended the Christian concert event.

On April 26, 2015, Jehovah's Witnesses' Special Meeting in conjunction with the Philippines Branch visit of a Headquarter's Representative was held at MOA Arena.[30] It was attended by 14,194 delegates from select congregations in Metro Manila and nearby provinces.

Other uses

On December 30, 2014, the Mall of Asia Arena served as the wedding reception venue of GMA Network actors Dingdong Dantes and Marian Rivera.

On November 18, 2015, the Mall of Asia Arena served as the venue for the welcome dinner hosted by President Benigno Aquino III for the visiting economic leaders participating at the APEC Economic Leaders' Meeting.[31]
