Maria Varela

Maria Varela (born 1940) is an American community organizer. She won a MacArthur Fellowship.

Life
She grew up in Chicago. She graduated from Alverno College. She married Lorenzo Zuniga Jr.[1] She was a photographer for Black Star (photo agency).[2]
She was a member of the Student Nonviolent Coordinating Committee from 1962 to 1967. She graduated from University of Massachusetts.[3] She was a visiting professor at Colorado College.[4] She was adjunct professor at University of New Mexico.[5]
She helped organize rural development.[6] She helped found Tierra Wools co-op.[1][7]
She lives in Albuquerque.[8]
