The Marina Abramović Institute (MAI) is a performance art organization founded by performance artist Marina Abramović, with a focus on durational works and the use of the "Abramovic Method." It is a proposed multi-functional museum space in Hudson, NY, USA.[1]

Mission

MAI explores, supports, and presents performance. MAI encourages collaboration between the arts, science, and the humanities. MAI will serve as the legacy of Marina Abramović. MAI uses what is known as the "Abramovic Method" to help participants to develop skills for observing long durational performances through "a series of exercises and environments designed to increase awareness of their physical and mental experience in the moment". [2]

Proposed Site

Abramović purchased the site for the institute in 2007.[3] Located in Hudson, New York, the building was built in 1933 and has been used as a theatre and community tennis center.[4] The building will be renovated according to a design by Rem Koolhaas and Shohei Shigematsu of OMA.[5]

Kickstarter Campaign

As of 2013, the early design phase of this project has been funded by a Kickstarter campaign.[6] The campaign was funded by more than 4,000 contributors, including Lady Gaga and Jay-Z.[7] Lady Gaga donated $100,000 to fund the Institute through Haus of Gaga.[8]

In conjunction with the campaign, game designer Pippin Barr is releasing a series of works thematically related to the MAI. The Digital Marina Abramovic Institute, which allows players to explore a web-based representation of the institute, was released in fall 2013.[9] Another MAI collaboration, Durations, consists of a series of small web games to be released throughout January 2014.[10]

Traveling Residencies

In 2015, "Terra Comunal - MAI", held at SESC was an ambitious undertaking held in São Paulo, Brazil. At SESC Pompeia, MAI is presenting the Abramovic Method; a series of talks with Abramovic; and eight Brazilian artists who will perform during the duration of the exhibition. There is also a designated space for free experimentation and collaboration where visitors will have the opportunity to explore the directions and limits of immaterial art and performance, as well as special programming that includes re-performances of Abramovic’s work by artist Andrea Boller.[11]

In 2016, NEON, an art nonprofit based in Athens founded by Greek business man and collector, Dimitris Daskalopoulos, and MAI partnered to present As One in Athens which will consist of the Abramović Method, newly commissioned performance pieces by Greek artists, and an extensive public program of lectures, workshops, discussions and other public participatory events. The largest and most ambitious project dedicated to performance art in Greece to date, As One will place this contemporary art form in the spotlight in order to engage and inspire the Greek public. With this collaboration, NEON and MAI aimed to provide a platform and help foster a new generation of Greek performance artists. A number of emerging Greek artists have been selected by Abramović to train and perform, and have been commissioned to develop and present new works for the project.[12]

Criticism

The Marina Abramovic Institute has been criticized for its use of unpaid "volunteers" for positions that require advanced skills, such as "proficiency in Microsoft Office, Adobe Creative Suite and basic HTML / CSS coding, familiarity with non-profit administration." [13]
