The position was created in 1870 as a modification of that of the Minister of Public Works (Ministre des Travaux Publics) (1830–1870). It has changed names many times and has also frequently been combined with the positions of Minister of Public Works (Ministre de l'Équipement), Minister of Housing (Logement), Minister of Tourism, Minister of Territorial Development (Aménagement du territoire) and Minister of the Sea.

Following the election of Nicolas Sarkozy as President of France, the Ministry of Transport was merged with the Ministry of Ecology, Energy, Sustainable Development, and Territorial Development

The current position of Secretary of State in charge of Transport is held by Thierry Mariani since 2010.
