Byron Nelson's record 18 victories came in a year when many potential rivals would have been in the armed forces.[citation needed] Nelson's year of 1945 was the one which is tarnished because of the missing top players such as Hogan for half the year while Mangrum and Demaret missed virtually the entire year.[citation needed] Hogan and Demaret played in only 2 of Nelson's 11 straight tournament wins and Mangrum played in none.[citation needed]
