Nathan Luke Robert Doyle (born 12 January 1987) is an English footballer who plays for Luton Town in League Two.
Doyle, who developed as a player through Derby County's academy, has played for the England U16 side, England U17 side and England U20 side. He can play at right-back, central midfield, or the right side of midfield.
Career
Born in Derby, Derbyshire,[1] Doyle started his career playing for Noel Baker School, Derby.[citation needed] He made his first appearance for Derby County on 1 November 2003, aged 16, in a league game against Preston North End, which Derby lost 3–0. In February 2006, Doyle was on loan to Notts County and his first game for the club from Nottinghamshire was on 25 February 2006 in a league game against Lincoln City. He returned to Derby in May 2006. After a loan spell with Bradford City, he was transferred to Hull City on 31 January 2007, for £100,000. He made his Hull City debut in a 2–1 defeat to Plymouth Argyle on the final day of the 2006–07 season. His first senior goal came in Hull's 4–1 victory over Watford in the second leg of the Football League Championship play-offs on 14 May 2008,[3] the same day he became a father.
Hull were promoted to the Premier League, but Doyle did not feature in the top division until 26 December, when he came on as a substitute during a 5–1 defeat to Manchester City.[4]
Doyle went on loan to Championship side Barnsley on 18 September 2009. He made his debut the following day, coming on for Jacob Butterfield at a 0–0 draw with Swansea City. In January 2010, Doyle signed permanently for Barnsley on a free transfer after being told he could leave Hull.[5]
On 22 September 2010, Derbyshire Police said Doyle had been arrested on suspicion of possessing cocaine.[6] He was released by Barnsley after the 2011–12 season.
On 4 August 2012 he returned to Bradford City and signed a 1-year deal.[7] He made his debut on 11 August in a 1–0 win against Notts County in the League Cup.[8] He made his league debut on 21 August in a 1–0 win against Fleetwood Town.[9] On 30 October, Doyle helped Bradford into the quarter-finals of the League Cup by scoring his penalty in the shoot-out against Wigan Athletic after the game had finished 0–0 after extra-time.[10] He scored his first goals for the club on 12 February 2013, scoring twice in a 3–0 win away to Wycombe Wanderers.[11] He started in the 2013 Football League Cup Final. On 3 July, he signed a new one-year contract at the club.[12] On 9 June 2014 Doyle left Bradford City.[13]
Doyle signed a one-year deal at League Two club Luton Town on 11 September 2014, receiving the squad number 26.[14] Doyle's performances in midfield led to him winning the Luton Town Supporters Club Player of the Year award, as voted for by fans.[15] On 10 April 2015, Doyle signed a two-year contract extension with Luton to keep him at the club until 2017.[16]
