Nayak (title)

Nayak (which means The Hero in Sanskrit & many Indian languages) is a title used by various castes and ethnic groups across India . But in Odisha it used to Denote Hindu Kshatriya groups called Khandayats . Alternative spellings and variations include Nayaka, Nayakar, Nayagar, Nayakkar, Naik, Naiker, Naicker, Naickan, Naiken, Nayakkan, Nayan, Nayar, Nayanar, Nair, Naidu, Nayudu and Naidoo'.[1]

In Andhra Pradesh and Tamil Nadu, the title is used as a surname by castes such as the Vanniyar,[2][3] and Kapu Rajakambalam (Pedda Kapu). In Kerala, the term Nair, Nayar, Nayanar etc. is said to be the adoption of the Sanskrit word Nayaka in Malayalam.[4]
