Netaji Subhash Engineering College (Bengali: নেতাজী সুভাষ ইঞ্জিনিয়ারিং কলেজ) or NSEC is a graduate and undergraduate engineering college of eastern India located in Kolkata, West Bengal, India. Established in 1998, it is situated at Techno City, Panchpota, Garia in the southern part of Kolkata. The institute is noted for its strong academic foundations and ranks as one of the top engineering colleges in the state of West Bengal.[1]

History

Netaji Subhash Engineering College (NSEC) was set up, keeping in mind the ideals of Netaji Subhas Chandra Bose, who contributed to the Indian Freedom Movement. Netaji believed that true independence could only stem from a strong base in education and technology. The college was set up in 1998 in collaboration with the Techno India Group and The Institute of Computer Engineers (India). The college started with three engineering courses and today is one of the largest self-aided engineering colleges in West Bengal. At its inception, the college was affiliated to the University of Kalyani. In 2002, the college was affiliated by the newly instituted West Bengal University of Technology.

Netaji Subhash Engineering College operates out of its suburban campus in Techno City, Kolkata, Garia in the southern part of Kolkata. The institute is connected to other parts of the city through both railways and roadways. The nearest railway station is the Garia railway station in the Sealdah-Sonarpur section of the Kolkata Suburban Railway and the nearest bus terminus is the Garia Station Bus Stand. The Dhalua Main Road connects the institute to Garia railway station. The Kavi Subhash metro station provides Kolkata Metro Rail connectivity to different parts of the city.

Admission

  • Undergraduate

The admission procedure for BTech is based on the West Bengal Joint Entrance Examination (WBJEE) and JEE(Main).

  • Postgraduate

MTech admissions are offered through GATE examination and a personal interview. MCA admission entrants are required to qualify the state level entrance test named JECA (Joint Entrance for Computer Application).

  • Doctoral

PhD admissions are offered through personal interview of the Techno India University.

The college is affiliated to the West Bengal University of Technology (WBUT) and Techno India University. The courses offered by the college under WBUT are approved by the All India Council for Technical Education (AICTE) and was accredited by the National Board of Accreditation(NBA).

The Department of Electronics Engineering was established in 1998 and was accredited by the NBA in 2004.

Department of Electronics & Instrumentation Engineering

The Department of Electronics & Instrumentation Engineering was formed under the Department of Electronics in 2006. It became a full-fledged separate department in 2009.

Department of Bio-Medical Engineering

The Department of Bio-Medical Engineering was formed under the Department of Electronics in 2002. It became a full-fledged separate department in 2009 offering the B.Tech program in Bio-Med Engineering.

The Department of Computer Sciences was established in 1998 and was accredited by he NBA in 2004.

The Techno India University is accredited by the University Grants Commission (India).[2] The departments in the college affiliated to the Techno India University are:

  • Doctoral Program (PhD) in Cellular Automata, Web Intelligence, Distributed Computing, Neural Networks, Artificial Intelligence, Multimedia Systems and Compiler Design.[3]

Department of Electrical Engineering

  • Doctoral program (PhD) in Electrical Power System, Electrical Machines and Control Engineering.[4]

Department of Basic Engineering Sciences

  • 3-years undergraduate program covering all branches of Science, the knowledge of which are required in the field of Engineering.[5]

NBA and TEQIP

In 2005 the college was given accreditation from the National Board of Accreditation (NBA) for B.Tech in Computer Science and Engineering, Electronics and Communication Engineering, Electrical Engineering. In April 2008 the same accreditation was given for information technology.[7] The college was also selected for an educational grant from the World Bank in its Technical Education Quality Improvement Program (TEQIP) as one of the few institutes in West Bengal.[8] NSEC ranked Second in Project Implementation of TEQIP (following Jadavpur University which achieved first place in West Bengal).[9] The institute is regarded as one of the best in West Bengal based on the number of students who prefer this college over other private engineering colleges of the state.[10]

There is no formal ranking system among the engineering colleges of West Bengal. However, several unofficial ranking systems place NSEC among the leading engineering colleges of West Bengal.[1][17][18] The college is foreseen to become one of the better engineering colleges in India in near future. However, at present, the college does not feature among the top 50 engineering schools in India.

Industry Academia Partnership Initiative

In 2008, Infosys launched the Campus Connect program, an industry-academia partnership initiative, with 60 colleges in India. The college was one of the institutes that was selected for the program and as of 2015, the program is still active.[19]

Phoenix, the Official Tech Club

The history of PHOENIX, the official Tech Club of the college, dates back to 2006, when seven students formed a platform that would think beyond the academic courses that everyone studies in college. Thus began Phoenix — the Tech Club. Today, every student of NSEC is essentially a member of Phoenix and the Club is well known in other tech colleges of the state.

The functioning of Phoenix stands on its various pillars: The PR Team, the Creative Team, the Database Team, the Web Team, the C Team, the Photography Team etc. Today, besides organising the three big events (Avenir – the annual Tech Fest, Brainstormer – The Inter College Quiz Competition and Kurukshetra – the Intra College Debate Competition) Phoenix holds forums. Presently these are: The C Forum, The Robotix Forum, The SSPD forum and the Web Designing Forum. "Come, Let's Rise", is the motto of the club[20]

Wiki Academy

The first Wiki Academy of Kolkata was set up at the college in collaboration with Wikimedia Foundation, India. The event witnessed large scale participation of students from colleges and universities.

Nixal

Nixal – the GNU/Linux user group of Netaji Subhash Engineering College (NSEC) was formed by the college. The group was the brainchild of a student of the Computer Science & Engineering Department, Mr.Asis Biswas. Nixal was inaugurated by Richard Stallman on 19 February 2003. The group was formed to learn about and contribute to GNU/Linux and spread the message of free software movement. The group follows Open Source Software ethics. After 2005 the activities of NIXAL saw a decline but now it is being revived. Nixal now exists as an open-ended user group and promotes the free software movement through seminars and workshops(FOSS).

Placements and Higher Studies

The majority of students from the college are placed in the software industry. A few students choose the core engineering sectors.[21] Many students opt for higher education, pursuing the likes of Masters/PhD or MBA in institutes of India and abroad. Through campus and off-campus drives, most students of NSEC get placed in multinational companies such as Tata Consultancy Services, Accenture, IBM, Microsoft, Apple Inc., Ericsson, Idea Cellular, Oracle, CapGemini, SAP AG, HCL Enterprise, Cognizant, Infosys, Wipro, Siemens, Mindtree, Tata Elxsi, Syntel and alike and in nationalised sectors such as National Thermal Power Corporation, Air India, Steel Authority of India Limited, BSNL, etc. Defence establishments like the Indian Air Force and the Indian Army visit the campus to take students from the college.[21] NSEC records the highest placements in the Techno India Group.

Freshers' Welcome Party

The Freshers' Welcome Party used to be held to introduce first year students to college life. The Freshers' Welcome titled BLOSSOMS had seen students' performances as well as bands like Fossils, Eshaan, Colors, Cactus and other Bangla Bands. However,it has not been held since 2013. Nevertheless, the students are in dialogue with the college authorities,so that it can be resumed in a short time again.

Annual Cultural Fest

Mesmerizer, the annual cultural fest of NSEC usually held in March/April is often regarded as one of the best college fests of Kolkata and is sponsored by companies like IBM, Wipro, NIIT, Air India, Coca-Cola and Hero-Honda. The cultural program is a mixture of rock and classical music. It started in 2002, the first Fest of NSEC. That same year the first batch of B.Tech passed out from NSEC. That time the guest performers were Chandrabindoo, Nachiketa, Cactus and Bhoomi. Celebrities who have performed at the college include KK, Kunal Ganjawala, Neeraj Shridhar, Javed Ali, Euphoria, Bombay Vikings, Bangladeshi Band Miles, Bangla bands like Lakkichhara, Cactus, Fossils, Eeshaan, Prithibi, Morruddyan, Chandrabindoo, Bhoomi and Underground Authority.

Annual Tech Fest

The Annual Tech Fest Avenir is one of the earliest Tech Fests of Kolkata was set up with help from Kshitij of Indian Institute of Technology, Kharagpur. The tech fest has seen participants from almost all major engineering colleges of India. It started in 2003 with a participation of 100 people. Over the years it has grown enormously with Avenir 2014 seeing participants count of over 4000 from all major engineering colleges of India.

Homecoming - The Annual ECE Alumni Meet

The Electronics & Communication Engineering (ECE) Alumni Association was founded in the year 2014 and the Department of ECE hosted its inaugural Alumni Meet in April 2015.

The ECE Alumni Association is a voluntary organization of the faculty, ex-students and present students of the Department. It aims to sustain strong ties between the ex-students and present students of the department for the benefit of both. After completion of B.Tech, a student may want to join the software industry or search for core electronics jobs through off-campus drives or pursue higher studies in either of engineering or management related disciplines in India or elsewhere in the world. The ECE Alumni Association provides guidance and support to all through its communication with ex-students who are well-established in related fields. To do that the association organizes seminars/workshops/talks all around the year where prominent ex-students from around the world are invited back to campus. The Association also organizes its Annual Reunion : "Homecoming" between February and April every year. The inaugural reunion garnered appreciation from all corners.All ECE students of the college are natural members of the association, but also pay a nominal amount as Annual Membership Fee which helps to run the activities of the association smoothly.

Inceptra-IT Alumni Meet

The alumni meet of the students of the Department of Information & Technology is known as "Inceptra" and was first held on August 9, 2015.

Student Organisations

There are no student organisations at present, apart from the student-founded Tech Club Phoenix and the Departmental Alumni Associations formed by the students in some of the departments. Presently,the Students of the Electronics & Communication Engineering Department are planning to form a General Students Body of their Department.
