Nilokheri (Hindi: नीलोखेड़ी) is a town and a municipal committee in Karnal district in the Indian state of Haryana. It has 13 wards. The town is located about 143 km from Delhi on National Highway 1 and is well connected to rail routes as well.

History

Established in 1948, after the Partition of India, social visionary Shri S. K. Dey. by establishing a new township at Nilokheri to house the displaced persons coming from Pakistan, at that Karnal, Haryana at that time Punjab. Nilokheri was founded and planned as the new capital of the state of Punjab. Impressed by the planning of the town, Pandit Jawhar Lal Nehru used to call it the town of his dreams. However, the town faced a heavy flood at a time when only 7 of its many planned sectors were developed. In view of this, the capital of Punjab was kept at Chandigarh.

Geography

Physiography

The town Nilokheri lies in Nardak, Khadir and Bangar area and is surrounded by G. T. Road in the east, Railway track of Northern Railways in the west, Chautang Nalla, a natural drain in the north and three irrigation water works i.e. Rakshi distributory, Chapad Nalla and Indri Drain in the south. Rakshi distributory further is divided into two channels at this south point of Nilokheri. All these act as physical barrier in the expansion of the town.[2]

Nilokheri has extreme temperatures all year.

Flora and fauna

Nilokheri has not much of biodiversity in flora and fauna. Trees and plants found over this township region are babul/kikar, eucalyptus, sehtoot/mulberry, jamun, putus bushes, congress grass or gajar ghans etc. Birds found over this township region are sparrows, mynas, pigeons, kingfishers, parrots, egrets, etc. The species of fauna found over this township region include domestic animals such as cows, buffaloes, horses etc. including some reptiles such as mongoose, snakes etc. and some wild fishes like catfish.

Nilokheri has an average literacy rate of 73%, higher than the national average of 59.5%: male literacy is 77%, and female literacy is 69%. In Nilokheri, 13% of the population is under 6 years of age.

Utility services are well managed including water supplies, irrigation and agriculture, banking. Medical services are served by a Civil Hospital and private hospitals.

Roadways

National Highway 1 (India) Grand Trunk Road built by Sher Shah Suri passes through Nilokheri. Roads connecting major cities are providing movement for passenger and freight traffic. There is a district road connecting Kurukshetra to Salarpur to Nilokheri HR State highway 33 Karsa Dhand (N.K.D.) road serving the purpose of connectivity of nearby towns and villages.

Healthcare

There is a civil hospital run by state government having variety of facilities fulfilling the purpose of ill and diseased people. There is also a Veterinary Hospital in Poultry Area, Nilokheri.

Places of interest

There are some very few places to visit in Nilokheri. Gole Market Park is one of them. It is situated almost at the center i.e. heart of the city surrounded by the local market. Many people come to this place in morning and evening. Govt. High school play ground and Polytechnic Institute's play ground for games, Dusshera, Diwali celebrations etc.

Nilokheri is a regional hub for leading pre-schools, primary and secondary schools. Some of the best schools in this region are in Nilokheri. Nilokheri is the hub not only for higher secondary education but also for Technical education for the people of the town but also for people of nearby areas.

Integrated Training Center, Nilokheri was an employment and training agency in Nilokheri in Karnal district in the state of Haryana owned and managed by Khadi and Village Industries Commission a statutory body formed by the Government of India and responsible for upgrading technical skills of technicians.

History

It was built around the vocational training centre that was transferred from Kurukshetra, in July, 1948 to the 1100 acres of swampy land on the Delhi-Ambala highway as one of several enterprises intended to provide employment and training for displaced persons following the partition of India It was a part of the scheme called "Mazdoor Manzil" aimed at self-sufficiency for the rural-cum-urban township in all the essential requirements of like. This training center was under Small Industries Development Organization (SIDO) and used to provided training to extension officers (industries of State Governments as well as managers and technician entrepreneurs both in modern small scale and traditional village industries. later on Monday 13 April 1958 colony was inaugurated by Shri Lal Bahadur Shastri current incharge of Ministry of Commerce and Industry (India) During the Year 1986-87 the center trained 200 technician, 85 women under core women training programme and 57 SIDO officers.[4]

Functions

ITC as a part of SIDO organisation it provides technical training to artisans and workers sponsored by the state government. It also organizes training of Extension Officers engaged in various developmental organization.

ITC as Central Tool Room, Extension Center, Nilokheri

Due to some conflict between the Principal and Vice-Principal of Integrated Training Centre was relinquished. Later on 23 June 2014 the center was taken over by Ministry of Micro, Small and Medium Enterprises which led to its development as Extension Center for Central Tool Room, Ludhiana i.e. Central Tool Room, Extension Center, Nilokheri. Currently running various technical short term courses. It provides summer training programs for graduates and Under graduates perusing Degree/Diploma in Engineering or Computer Sciences. This Center specialises in training technecians in Mechanical engineering related fields.
