Northsound Radio commenced broadcasting at 6am on 27 July 1981 from converted studios in an old schoolhouse on Kings Gate, near Anderson Drive in Aberdeen. The station first broadcast from 6am-8pm each day. In 1995, the station split its services to become Northsound 1 and Northsound 2. Both stations now also broadcast online, on smartphone applications and DAB (Digital Audio Broadcasting – i.e. Digital Radio). Northsound 2 is broadcast on 1035MW.

On 3 June 2013, station owners Bauer Radio announced Northsound 2 would axe its remaining local programming with the weekday breakfast show, then presented by John McRuvie, replaced with a networked show hosted by Robin Galloway from Monday 1 July 2013 across Bauer's network of AM stations in Scotland.[1] The station became part of the Bauer City 2 network upon its launch on Monday 5 January 2015.

Programming

The majority of Northsound 2's programming is taken from the Bauer City 2 network, although there are separate Scottish shows at peak times, including weekday breakfast and drive time.[2] Outwith news, there is no longer any programming material that originates from Aberdeen.

Networked programming originates from Clyde 2 in Clydebank, Key 2 in Manchester, Forth 2 in Edinburgh, Metro Radio 2 in Newcastle, Tay 2 in Dundee and Bauer's headquarters at Golden Square, Soho.

News

Northsound 2 broadcasts local news bulletins hourly from 6am to 7pm on weekdays, from 9am to 1pm on Saturdays and from 9am to 12pm on Sundays. Headlines are broadcast on the half hour during weekday breakfast and drivetime shows, alongside sport, traffic and business bulletins.

National bulletins from Sky News Radio are carried overnight with bespoke networked Scottish bulletins at weekends, produced from Radio Clyde's newsroom in Clydebank.
