Pokrov (Ukrainian: Покров), formerly Ordzhonikidze (Ukrainian: Орджонікідзе) is a small city and mining town in Dnipropetrovsk Oblast of central Ukraine. Administratively, it is incorporated within Ordzhonikidze municipality as a city of oblast significance. Population: 41,374 (2013 est.)[1].

History

The city was established in 1956 when several miners settlements of the Ordzhonikidze Mine were merged into a city. Previously, in 1883 a Russian engineer-geologist Valerian Domger discovered rich deposits of manganese ore in a basin of the uk (Solona River, Bezavluk; Solona River). Since that time in area started to appear mining towns such as Prychepylivka (today – Hirnytske). In 1886 in place of the modern city were created Pokrovski quarries. Pokrov is located on the site of the 17th century Chortomlyk Sich.

On 15 May 2015 President of Ukraine Petro Poroshenko signed a bill into law that started a six months period for the removal of communist monuments and the mandatory renaming of settlements with a name related to Communism.[2]
