Payback (2015) was a professional wrestling pay-per-view (PPV) event produced by WWE. It took place on May 17, 2015, at the Royal Farms Arena in Baltimore, Maryland.[1] It was the third event under the Payback chronology, and the first Payback held outside of the Chicago suburb of Rosemont, Illinois. Payback was available for free to new subscribers on WWE's monthly subscription service, the WWE Network in over 140 countries.[2][3] Nine matches took place at the event, with two matches on the pre-show. In the main event, Seth Rollins defeated Roman Reigns, Dean Ambrose and Randy Orton in a Fatal 4-Way match to retain the WWE World Heavyweight Championship. The event has sold 54,000 buys (excluding WWE Network views), down from the previous year's 67,000 buys.[4]

Payback consisted of professional wrestling matches that involve wrestlers from pre-existing scripted feuds or storylines that play out on WWE's primary television programs, Raw and SmackDown. Wrestlers will portray heroes or villains as they follow a series of events that build tension and culminate in a wrestling match or series of matches.[5][6]

At Extreme Rules, Cena retained the United States Championship by defeating Rusev in a Russian Chain match. Later in the event, after visiting The Authority, Lana announced that Cena would defend the title against Rusev in an "I Quit" match at the event.[7]

At Extreme Rules, Seth Rollins defeated Randy Orton in a Steel Cage match to retain the WWE World Heavyweight Championship.[7] on the April 27 episode of Raw and as a result of a vote on the WWE App, Rollins was scheduled to defend the title against Orton and Reigns in a Triple Threat match at the event.[8] On the May 4 episode of Raw, Dean Ambrose defeated Rollins, and per match stipulation, he was added to the match, thus making the match a Fatal Four Way.[9] On the May 11 episode of Raw, Triple H announced that if Rollins loses the title, Kane will no longer be the WWE Director of Operations.[10]

On the Extreme Rules pre-show, Neville defeated Bad News Barrett.[11] On April 28, Barrett defeated Neville to win the King of the Ring tournament, changing his ring name to King Barrett. On the May 7 episode of SmackDown, Neville and Dolph Ziggler defeated Barrett and Sheamus.[12] On the May 11 episode of Raw, it was announced that Barrett would face Neville at the event.[10]

At Extreme Rules, Ziggler defeated Sheamus in a Kiss Me Arse match.[7] On the May 7 episode of SmackDown, Ziggler and Neville defeated Sheamus and Barrett.[12] On the May 11 episode of Raw, it was announced that Ziggler would face Sheamus at the event.[10]

At Extreme Rules, The New Day defeated Tyson Kidd and Cesaro to win the Tag Team Championship.[7] On the April 30 episode of SmackDown, Kidd and Cesaro defeated The New Day by disqualification in a rematch for the titles.[13] On the May 11 episode of Raw, The New Day were scheduled to defend the titles against Kidd and Cesaro in a 2-out-of-3 falls tag team match at the event.[10]

On the May 11 episode of Raw, The Ascension interruped a match between Curtis Axel and Damien Sandow, in the guise of Macho Mandow, and attacked both wrestlers, resulting in Axel and Mandow teaming together to attack The Ascension. A match between the two pairs was scheduled for the Payback pre-show.[10]

On the April 27 episode of Raw, Bray Wyatt attacked Ryback after Ryback defeated Bo Dallas, having sent messages to Ryback weeks prior.[8] On the April 30 episode of SmackDown, Wyatt attacked Ryback after Ryback defeated Luke Harper.[13] On the May 11 episode of Raw, Ryback attacked Wyatt.[10] On May 13, it was announced on WWE.com that Ryback would face Wyatt at the event.

At Extreme Rules, Nikki Bella defeated Naomi to retain the Divas Championship.[7] On the April 27 episode of Raw, Naomi defeated Brie Bella.[8] On the May 4 edition of Raw, Naomi and the returning Tamina Snuka attacked Nikki and Brie.[9] On the May 11 episode of Raw, Tamina defeated Brie.[10] On the May 14 episode of SmackDown, it was announced that Tamina and Naomi would face The Bella Twins at the event.[14]

Event

Pre-show

Prior to the PPV, R-Truth defeated Stardust after a Lie Detector. The second match on the pre-show was a tag team match between "The Mega Powers" (Macho Mandow and Curtis Axel) and The Ascension (Konnor and Viktor), which The Ascension won after a Fall of Man to Mandow.

Main card

The first match of the night on the main card was a singles match between Dolph Ziggler and Sheamus. Ziggler got revenge on Sheamus by, with Sheamus down in the corner, lifting up one part of his trunks and shoving his buttocks in Sheamus' face. The action continued with Sheamus getting Ziggler in position for a Brogue Kick, but Ziggler dodges it and hit a Famouser. He made the cover, but Sheamus kicks out at two. Ziggler continued his offensive and pounced on Sheamus in the corner. Sheamus came back with a counter of his own — a powerbomb. He got a two-count. Later, Sheamus hit White Noise and then applied the Cloverleaf. Ziggler fought it off and got to the ropes. Sheamus attacked Ziggler, but Ziggler answered with a headbutt, only for his head to bleed after it. Shortly after, Sheamus hit Ziggler with the Brogue Kick to win the match.

The second match of the night was for the WWE Tag Team Championship between defending champions The New Day (Big E and Kofi Kingston) (with Xavier Woods) and the team of Tyson Kidd and Cesaro (with Natalya). The first two falls came after team finishers. Kidd and Cesaro won the first fall after Kidd hit a dropkick following a Cesaro Swing on Kingston. Woods wanted in for the second fall as he called for the Freebird Rule. Natalya started arguing with Woods while Kidd took him out. Big E made a dive on Kidd and a suplex on the floor. Afterwards, Big E took control for the majority of the second fall. Cesaro tried to intervene, but Big E speared Cesaro off the ring. Kidd kicked out of pinning attempts by both Kingston and Big E, but in the end, after being hit by Big E and Kingston's double-team move, the New Day tied up the contest and one fall apiece. Cesaro was tagged in and started hitting European uppercuts. Kingston is hit by one into the corner for a two-count. Cesaro then applied a back breaker to Kingston followed up by a springboard elbow from Kidd but again Kingston kicked out. Cesaro and Big E then brawled outside the ring, and Cesaro tossed Big E over the announce table. Big E was able to recover and break up another pinning attempt on Kingston. Eventually, Cesaro and Kingston were in the ring when Xavier Woods sneaked in and got a cradle pinfall victory as the champions retain the titles.

The third match of the night was another singles match between Ryback and Bray Wyatt. Ryback started off in control but Wyatt targeted Ryback's kneecap. Ryback countered with a Thesz Press, forcing Wyatt to get off the ring. The fight continued outside the ring and included Wyatt hitting Ryback with a powerbomb on the edge of the apron. Wyatt followed that up with a back senton spash, but this one was from the top of the apron to Ryback outside the ring. Ryback, seemingly hurt, barely beat the 10-count and got back into the ring. The two men started exchanging offense. Later in the match Ryback went airborne and successfully hit a splash on Wyatt, but only for a two count. At the end of the match, Wyatt went for Sister Abigail, only for Ryback to counter it into a Shell Shock, but Wyatt grabbed the ropes, preventing the finisher. The two men got tangled up in a corner, which allowed Wyatt to quickly pull apart one of the turnbuckles and then throw Ryback into it, further injuring his core from the outside dive. Wyatt hit Sister Abagail, this time for the win.

The fourth match of the night was an "I Quit" match for the WWE United States Championship between defending champion John Cena and Rusev (with Lana). At one point during the match, the fight spilled into the crowd, as well as the production area. Rusev eventually locked Cena in the Accolade. Cena didn't quit, but passed out. Referee Mike Chioda informed Rusev that the match can only end when someone quits, so unlike a submission match, this one continued. Steel steps, a steel barricade, a spear breaking through the barricade, Cena using a laptop as a weapon and Rusev using the pyro table for an explosion all came into play during the match. At the end of the match, Cena ended up using the ring ropes for extra torque on the STF as he locked up Rusev. Lana couldn't take Rusev's suffering so she grabbed a microphone and called for it to end, claiming that Rusev was saying "I Quit" in Bulgarian. As Lana was Rusev's manager, the referee obliged and Cena retained the title.

The fifth match of the night was a Divas tag team match between The Bella Twins (Brie Bella and Nikki Bella) and the team of Naomi and Tamina. Tamina hit a superkick on Brie early on in the match. Tamina then slammed Brie into the ringside barrier. Later, Naomi hit Nikki with the Rear View to get the win.

The sixth and final match on the main card was another singles match between Neville and King Barrett. Neville started out with his high-flying offense and then King Barrett started pounding on Neville. Eventually, Barrett refused to get back inside the ring following the referee's 10-count, thus intentionally losing. Following the match, Barrett continued to pound on Neville, including putting on his royal attire, but Neville back suplexed Barrett (and broke the royal scepter in the process) and then hit the Red Arrow on Barrett.

Main event

The main event of the night was a Fatal 4-Way match for the WWE World Heavyweight Championship between defending champion Seth Rollins (with Jamie Noble and Joey Mercury), Roman Reigns, Dean Ambrose, and Randy Orton. During the match, there was a mini Shield reunion when Rollins, Reigns, and Ambrose hit their Triple Powerbomb on Orton into the announce table. Following the move, Rollins wanted the group to reunite, but Reigns and Ambrose attacked him. Kane jumped in to help Rollins. Kane got powerbombed on top of Rollins, who was on a table, but the table didn't break. Reigns and Ambrose hit another powerbomb on Kane, and this time, sent Kane and Rollins through the table. Ambrose and Reigns the started to wrestle each other. Reigns missed two Superman punches, but finally connected the third one on Ambrose. Reigns hit a spear on Ambrose and made a cover, but Rollins dived in to prevent the three-count. Orton got back into the fray and gave RKOs to Noble and Mercury, and hit a hanging DDT on Rollins. Orton then prepared for an RKO, however, Kane would try to interfere, only for Kane to receive an RKO. This allowed Rollins to kick Orton and hit a Pedigree for the pinfall victory and allowed him to retain his WWE World Heavyweight Championship.
