The Phoenix, Arizona City Council consists of a mayor and eight city council members. While the mayor is elected in a citywide election, city council members are elected by votes only in the districts they represent, with both the mayor and councillors serving four year terms.[1] The current mayor of Phoenix is Greg Stanton, a Democrat who was elected to a four-year term in 2011.[2] In setting city policy and passing rules and regulations, the mayor and city council members each have equal voting power.[1] The Phoenix mayoral election, 2015 were in 2015 for the office of mayor, as well as for the councilors in odd numbered districts. All the incumbents were re-elected.[3]

History

Before 1948, the city of Phoenix was governed by commission. In 1948, the system was changed to a city council with a mayor selected by plurality-at-large voting in nonpartisan elections. In 1982, the election system was changed so that councilors represented districts.[4]
