Felix Mendelssohn's Piano Sextet in D major, Op. 110, for piano, violin, two violas, cello, and double bass was composed in May 1824.

Structure

The work has four movements:

  1. Allegro vivace (D major, 4/4)
  2. Adagio (F-sharp major, 3/4)
  3. Menuetto (D minor, 6/8 - trio in F major)
  4. Allegro vivace (D major, 4/4 - final section, reprising the minuet, is surprisingly in D minor but nevertheless ends with a long Picardy third)
