Turkmenistan, is a country in Central Asia, bordered by Kazakhstan to the northwest, Uzbekistan to the north and east, Afghanistan to the southeast, Iran to the south and southwest, and the Caspian Sea to the west. Its capital and largest city is Ashgabat.

The official language, Turkmen, is closely related to the other Turkic languages.

Turkmenistan is a member of the Organisation of Islamic Cooperation, the Turkic Council, the TÜRKSOY community and the United Nations.

The Door to Hell (also known as the Gate to Hell, the Crater of Fire, Darvaza Crater) is a natural gas field in Derweze, Turkmenistan, that collapsed into an underground cavern in 1971, becoming a natural gas crater. Geologists set it on fire to prevent the spread of methane gas, and it has been burning continuously since then. The diameter of the crater is 69 m, and its depth is 30 m.

crater is a popular tourist attraction. In the past five years 50,000 tourists have visited the site. The gas crater has a total area of 5,350 m2, the size of an American football field. The surrounding area is also popular for wild desert camping.

Selected biography

Gurbanguly Berdimuhamedow

Gurbanguly Berdimuhamedow has been the President of Turkmenistan since 1 December 2011 after the death of Saparmurat Niyazov. He previously was from 17 December 2010 to 1 December 2011, having also been Prime Minister from 29 March 2007 until 28 November 2007. He also served as Chairman of the Social Democratic Party of Kyrgyzstan from 30 July 1999 to 23 September 2011.

Gurbanguly Berdimuhamedow was born in 1957 in Babarab, Ahal Region. He received his degree in dentistry while studying at the Turkmen State Medical Institute.

Berdimuhamedow has five children from his marriage to his first wife, three daughters, and a son. He is now married to his long-term Russian-mistress.
