[3] In 2014, Al received the distinction of Highly Commended in the Lifetime Achievement award category by Family Wealth Report (March 2014).[4] In 2013, Drexel University's LeBow College of Business named Al their 59th Business Leader of the Year (March 5, 2013).[5] Additionally, Tiburon Strategic Advisors recognized Al with the Tiburon CEO Summit Award (April 12, 2012).[6] Al was also recognized by Strategic Insight as one of the 60 most influential "Visionaries of the Modern Era of the Mutual Fund industry" (April 2011).[7]

History

1968 SEI created the first computer-simulated training technology for loan officers.

1970s when bank trust departments were still largely functioning as a “paper and pencil” business, SEI developed a completely automated trust and investment accounting system.

1980s SEI integrated modern investment portfolio theory with comprehensive asset allocation models.

  • In 1986 Gary P. Brinson, L. Randolph Hood, and SEI's Gilbert L. Beebower published a landmark study on investment policy titled "Determinants of Portfolio Performance," in the Financial Analysts Journal.[8]

1990s SEI launched a wealth management operating platform for independent, fee-based investment advisors, which aligned advisors’ business interests with their clients’ investment success.[citation needed]

2000s SEI delivered:

  • A pension management solution that integrates pension decisions with corporate finance objectives, enabling corporate managers to more fully address how pensions impact their company’s financial position.
  • An all-encompassing infrastructure for investment managers called Total Operational Outsourcing that provides an integrated platform for the processing of all investment types.
  • Goals-based investment strategies that enable investment advisors to link specific investment strategies to an investor’s goals, each with different time horizons and risk tolerance profiles
  • Global Wealth Services for private banks and wealth management organizations - a suite of services designed to support every facet of a global wealth management business.[9]

Culture

SEI’s campus is located on 90 acres (360,000 m2) and is 25 miles (40 km) outside center city Philadelphia. SEI’s corporate culture values transparency and has removed most physical boundaries to further this.[11] SEI’s office is an open environment with no private offices or executive break rooms. The furniture is on wheels to allow employees to rearrange their space according to their work needs. Spiraling cables, called “pythons,” provide power and mobility to each work station.[12] The goal in structuring SEI this way was to give employees a clear line of sight to management and to make a clear statement to all employees about the importance of collaboration and transparency.[13] In addition, SEI’s offices (U.S. and global) are home to artwork from The West Collection. Aside from decorating the space, the artwork is there to foster discussion and creativity.[14] The collection currently has 3,200 works of art and is funded by the West family.
