Saand / Sodha (Sindhi: سوڊها‎ / ساند‎), is a Rajput clan found in the Tharparkar district of Sindh in Pakistan and Rajasthan Kutch, Gujarat, Haryana of India.

History

The Sodha/Saand originally belonged to the family of Agnivanshi Rajputs. They are said to have converted to Islam, at the time of the conquest of Sindh by the Arabs, around 8th Century A.D.The Saand and Gajju were originally Sodha.Sindhi Rajput clan of Rajput (one of the 36 royal castes of Indian sub-continent) decadency.

Present circumstances

The community are now mainly are settled agriculturist, Rajput communities in Pakistan have confirmed that they maintain a distinct identity. They have maintained the system of exogamous marriages. They would be intermarrying only in Rajput community. Many of their villages are situated in the Thar Desert and are affected by environmental changes. They have their own Panchayat (community council), which deals with disputes within the community. The community are Sunni Hanafi Muslims, and speak the Marwari and Mewari dialects of Rajasthani,[1] Sindhi, Haryanvi and Urdu.

Sodha/Saand

Sodha/Saand Rajput are a sub clan of the Paramara (panwar) dynasty . A Parmara ruler named Bahada Rao, popularly known as Bar Rao, founder of Barmer (Juna Barmer) also known as Raja Dharnivrah of Naukoti Marwar, he had two sons named Rao Sodha and Rao Sankhla also known as "Shankh Kula", Sodha is derived from Sanskrit word ''Sodh" that means Brave and Powerful. Sodha moved to Ratakot (a Sindhi language which word means "Red Fort") modern day Khipro, Sodha invaded and captured Ratakot from Umra Parmars now Soomra, later on Sodha earned the title of "Rana" means "Raja" in Sindhi. being the only Rajput clan in the area.they use (Rana, Rao and Thakur) titles.

Distribution

The Sodha/Saand were initially settled in Tharparkar, Umarkot Sanghar, Naushahro Feroze, Tando Adam, Tando Allahyar and Nasarpur districts of Sindh. But now a majority of them resides in Karachi, Hyderabad, Shahdadpur, Mirpur Khas & Sukkur. They are found mainly in the western districts of Rajasthan state, Haryana state Kutch, Gujarat such as Bikaner, Jaisalmer, Barmer,Churu, and Jodhpur.
