Santosh Chandra Bhattacharyya was a teacher of Dhaka University and an intellectual martyr in the Bangladesh Liberation War. He was killed by Al Badr paramilitary of Pakistan Army.[1][2][3]

Early life

Santosh Chandra Bhattacharyya was born on 30 August 1915 in Nawabganj Upazila of Dhaka district in erstwhile East Bengal. He belonged to the Brahmin by birth.[4]

Bhattacharyya's studied at the department of history at the University of Dhaka. From there, he received a Bachelor of Arts degree with Honors in 1937. He received a Master of Arts degree with distinction from the same department in 1938.[4]

Career

Santosh Chandra Bhattacharyya joined Jagannath College in 1939. Ten years later, in 1949, Bhattacharyya joined his alma mater Dhaka University. He started working as a senior lecturer at the department of history.[4]

Death

On 14 December 1971 some people came to Bhattacharyya's house and abducted him blindfolded. He was later found dead in the Mirpur Shahid Minar among other martyred intellectuals.[5]

On 3 November 2013, Chowdhury Mueen-Uddin, a Muslim leader based in London, and Ashrafuz Zaman Khan, based in the US, were sentenced in absentia after the court found that they were involved in the abduction and murders of 18 people – nine Dhaka University teachers including Bhattacharyya, six journalists and three physicians – in December 1971.[6]
