Sibi (Balochi: بلوچ ) (Urdu: سِبی‎) is a city of Balochistan province of Pakistan. The city is located at 29°33'0N 67°52'60E at an altitude of 130 metres (429 feet)[1] and is headquarters of the district and tehsil of the same name.[2] According to the 2001 census of Pakistan, the population of Sibi is 52,100.[clarification needed][citation needed]

Languages

Like other Balochistan major urban centres Quetta, Machh, Mastung and Khuzdar it is a multi ethnic city where several languages are spoken including Sindhi (In Hindki and Frakhi dialects), Baluchi, Punjabi (including Hindko & Saraiki dialects), Pashto, Brahui, Persian (in Hazargi and Dehvari dialects) and Urdu. No language has clear majiority and Urdu serves as lingua franca for inter ethnic communications.[3]

History

The history of the town goes back to the 13th century. The Talli is biggest town in the area of Sibi. Silachi Baloch livie in Talli town.The little villages: Marghzani Kurak Rind, Mandwani, Marri, Lehri, Domki, Lashari, Mall Gishkori,mal Gorgage ,Sultan coat(Machi),Chandia, Chachar, Qaiser Gola, Siah Gola,and Dehpal.Sibi is now an important junction on the Sindh-Peshin railway, where the Harnai line and the Quetta loop line meet, near the entrance of the Bolan Pass, 88 kilometres (55 mi) southeast of Quetta. Its population in 1901 was 4551. The district, which was formed in 1903, has an area of 4152 mi² and had a population in 1901 of 74,555. The greater part became British territory by the treaty of Gandamak in 1879; the rest is remained freely]. Political control was also exercised over the Marri-Bugti country, with an additional area of 7124 mi², and population in 1901 of 38,919. Besides the town of Sibi, the district contained the hill station of Ziarat, the summer residence of the government and The Victoria Memorial Hall, now known as Jirga Hall,[4] which was built in 1903. Sibi is a historical city of Balochistan, and is its hottest city. It is sometimes also known as Sivi, purportedly for a Hindu princess. As of 1963, nine percent of Sibi's population were Hindu.[5]

Climate

Sibi has a hot desert climate (Köppen climate classification BWh) notable for its exceptionally hot summers with the average maximum reaching 46.0 °C (114.8 °F) in June. Winters are mild, and nights can even be quite chilly with temperatures approaching 0 °C (32 °F). The maximum temperature recorded in the city is 53 °C (127 °F), and the minimum is −7.1 °C (19.2 °F).[6] Precipitation is light and mainly falls in two distinct periods: in the early spring in March and April, and in the monsoon in July and August.

Transport

Sibi is on the western edge of Pakistan and is well connected with the country by a wide network of roads, railways and airways.

Railways

Sibi Railway Station is junction railway station. The railway track was lined in 1890s during the British era to link Sibi with rest of the country. The routes are Sibi from linked with Lahore, Karachi, Peshawar, Rawalpindi, Quetta, Multan, Faisalabad, Hyderabad, Rohri, Sukkur, Bahawalpur, Dera Ghazi Khan, Kot Adu, Gujrat, Jacobabad, Gujranwala, Khanewal, Nawabshah, Attock, Jhelum, and Nowshera.

Roads

Sibi is well connected by roads to the rest of the country. Sibi is connecting with Talli Quetta, Karachi, Jacobabad, Sukkur and Hyderabad route. Sibi is a historical city of Balochistan. Its actual name is Sivi (name of a Hindu Princess)[citation needed]. In the Road network of Sibi National Highway Authority has played a major role in the shape of N-65 Project whose Office is situated near to Sibi Bazar i.e NHA Complex Main Highway road in front of Sibi Toll Plaza.
