The SDAJ was formed on May 5, 1968 the 150th birthday of Karl Marx. Founded by adolescents and young members of the banned Communist Party (DKP), even before the DKP was reconstituted on 25 September 1968, the SDAJ participated in the social movements that grew out of the 1968 student movement. A large number of apprentices became politically involved in order to improve the quality of their training and their living conditions. The SDAJ grew out of this "apprentice movement", while at the same time taking on a political orientation and seeking to advance international class solidarity. These causes were furthered by the political self-organization of working and learning youths in spite of the authoritarian government. Since the establishment of the DKP SDAJ cooperates with the Communist Party, without giving up their independence as a youth organization. The SDAJ became one of the leading left-wing youth organizations in Germany and enjoyed a high political profile in the public eye – for example, in actions against fare increases ("Red Dot Actions"). The SDAJ claimed it had more than 35,000 members.

The official journal of the SDAJ was sold by its owners Élan Magazine (magazine). Publication of the journal was cancelled after its funding was cancelled by the SED. [14] Since 1972, the association organizes annual change in central and local Pentecostal camp. The SDAJ action on a demonstration May 1, 2006

From 1978 to 1988, the SDAJ organized the Festival of Youth biyearly with the Marxist Student Association Spartacus (MSB). The Festival of Youth was held mid-may on the grounds of the Dortmud exhibition. Numerous internationally known artists attended; for example, the 1978 festival saw figures such as Jutta Weinhold, Snowball, Udo Lindenberg, Pudys and the Titi Winterstein Quintet. Political debates were also a common feature. According to the SDAJ, more than 100,000 visitors attended.

Until the turn in the GDR, there were close contacts between the SDAJ and FDJ, which was considered a sibling organization. For example, each national association of SDAJ had to know a closer friendship district in East Germany, were made in the regular drives life in the GDR. In addition, a section of the public materials and infrastructure funds were financed by the GDR.

In the 1980s, the SDAJ played a major role in the peace movement, wherein it relied upon a policy of alliance against the wars and evils of imperialism.2015

In 1988, conflicts within the association publicly was cleared when the DKP and SDAJ increasingly gained reform positions of strength [15]. This resulted in SDAJ Federal Congress 1989 split in the organization, as the majority of the delegates had expressed for a proposal that would keep the body as Marxist working class youth organization. The unsuccessful flow around the national chairman Birgit Radow then left the Congress. It did not however succeed in creating new structures nationwide. Many of her former leading members found a new home in the youth structures of the PDS. The leadership of the SDAJ took a federal task force to Patrik Köbele. The SDAJ was thus preserved as a Marxist–Leninist organization over time of German reunification away.

With the change in the GDR and the reunification of Germany, the crisis came to a head in the SDAJ. Like the DKP they had experienced a rapid loss of members through resignations. After the end of the funding from the GDR newspapers and Holiday objects had given up full-time employees will be laid off. Until about 1993, the SDAJ remained virtually "headless" so that the federal center with constantly changing cast could often only look at the resolution of district associations, local groups and district / regional associations. In 1994 the reorganization and reactivation of district and local associations and the reconstruction of the country structures, but did not fail to numerous setbacks.

With the position soon returned a central theoretical debate and body of the Association out the same time represents a major financial challenge. The acquisition of new subscribers soon became a central theme of many SDAJ actions. After all, it was possible from the late 1990s to stabilize many local groups and to establish new, such as in Leipzig, Dresden, Gera, Potsdam, Rostock, Gadebusch and Berlin, so that could consolidate the number of members in the course of this year.

2015-Today

Due to the slight increase, members place since 2008 a biennial festival of youth, alternating with the three regional Pentecostal camps in Cologne Youth Park instead.

Especially in the work of schools and training workshops builds the association of its structures. Recently, the SDAJ tried by own admission, re-amplified by alliances with other youth organizations – as she has been involved in recent years throughout the country instrumental in the organization and implementation of nationwide education strike and engaged from then on increasingly in the student politics, such as, the structure of LSV (national student councils) or BSV (Federal student councils).

The SDAJ considers itself again as an important pillar of youth policy of the DKP and VVN-BdA. In summer of 2010, a SDAJ delegation participated in the "17th World Festival of Youth and Students "in Pretoria (South Africa) part. Points of contact she has with the party Die Linke.

End of February 2010 came the SDAJ in the headlines because the Syrian immigrants Aram A. was denied due to his membership in the SDAJ naturalization. [17]

In October 2011, the SDAJ held its 20th national congress of Hanover.
