South River High School is a large public high school in the United States, in the Annapolis suburb of Edgewater, Maryland in Anne Arundel County. It was built in 1978 and has 2,210 students currently enrolled, making it the largest public high school in Anne Arundel County (student body wise). It received a Blue Ribbon in education. Due to recent overcrowding in the Crofton area, students are bused in from Crofton, in addition to Davidsonville, Mayo, Riva, and Edgewater. South River's rival school is Arundel High School. South River has a great reputation throughout Maryland and is known as one of the best high schools in Anne Arundel County. In 2013, Newsweek ranked South River as one of the top 30 high schools in Maryland, and one of the top 1,000 in the country.[2]

The class of 2009 graduated with over $8.5 million in scholarships, and 5 senior students received Scholarships for Scholars from the Anne Arundel County Government. Members of the school's faculty have received awards from the Karen Gaffney Foundation, an organization promoting community service and excellence in special education programs.[3]

Nest Hour

At South River, there is a system for lunch called "Nest Hour." This hour is divided into two halves, with each half being 30 mins. long. During each half, or both, students can visit a teacher to make-up missing assignments, study, or re-do a test or quiz. Students can also go to the cafeteria, and eat lunch, and go socialize with friends. South River is one of the only schools in Maryland with an hour of lunch.[4]

Crofton Redistricting

In the 1990s, nearby Arundel High School was beginning to get overcrowded. At the time, all high school students residing in Crofton attended Arundel High School. Crofton parents were pushing for a new high school to be built in Crofton, but the attempt failed. In attempt to solve overcrowding issues at Arundel, the town of Crofton became split between two high schools (Arundel and South River). Crofton high school students who live in the district for Crofton Elementary and Nantucket Elementary still go on to Crofton Middle for middle school and Arundel for high school. However, Crofton high school students residing in the district for Crofton Meadows or Crofton Woods Elementary go on to Crofton Middle, then South River for high school. This redistricting was approved on March 18, 1998.[5]

STEM Magnet Program

South River features the rigorous STEM magnet program (Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics). It was introduced in the fall of 2009, and students from other Anne Arundel County public high school districts can apply to the magnet program and attend South River if they get accepted. South River is one of two high schools in Anne Arundel County featuring the STEM program, the other being North County High School in Glen Burnie.
