The Stockholm Environment Institute, or SEI, is a non-profit, independent research and policy institute specialising in sustainable development and environmental issues.[3]

Mission

SEI's mission is to "support decision-making and induce change towards sustainable development around the world by providing integrative knowledge that bridges science and policy in the field of environment and development."[3]

History

SEI was established in 1989 as an initiative of the Government of Sweden. The name of the Stockholm Environment Institute is derived from the 1972 UN Conference on the Human Environment in Stockholm.

Activities

SEI is commissioned to write reports by third parties which are frequently quoted in the press.[4]

SEI is registered in Sweden as a foundation (STIFT THE STOCKHOLM ENVIRONMENT INSTITUTE, SEI) and is governed by a Board of Directors appointed by the Government of Sweden for terms of four years.[6] The SEI board was first established on 21 June 1989

SEI has a total staff of about 181 and operates through seven centres:

  • Tallinn, Estonia [11] (established 1992)

  • Nairobi, Kenya[13] (established 2008)

The institute itself is organized into four broad research themes:[3]

  • Managing environmental systems[14]
  • Reducing climate risk[15]
  • Transforming governance[16]
  • Rethinking development[17]

In addition to these four themes, there is also a China Cluster[18] which operates at a research programme level and is focused on sustainability issues in China
