The magazine was relaunched as a monthly print magazine and online daily in 2014, with Sandipan Deb as the Editorial Director.[2] The website was launched in September 2014, and the first edition of the print magazine was launched in January 2015. Currently R. Jagannathan is Editorial Director of Swarajya.
History
Swarajya was launched as a weekly magazine in 1956 by journalist Khasa Subba Rao,[3] with the patronage of C. Rajagopalachari, one of the founders of the Swatantra Party,[4] and a regular contributor to the magazine in the form of his Dear Reader column.[5] The magazine strongly advocated individual freedom and freedom of enterprise as against Nehru's socialist policies. Swarajya enjoyed a reputation of being one of few magazines that argued against collectivist and statist policies of the ruling Indian National Congress.[6][7] Minoo Masani, R.Venkatraman, R.K. Laxman are some notable personalities who contributed to the magazine.[8][9][10] After Rajaji's death in 1972, the magazine began to decline and eventually closed in 1980.[11]
Relaunch
The magazine was relaunched as a monthly print magazine and online daily in 2014, with Sandipan Deb as the Editorial Director. The website was launched in September 2014, and the first edition of the print magazine was launched in January 2015.[11] Coimbatore-based Kovai Media Private Limited purchased the rights to the magazine from Chennai-based Bharathan Publishers, along with 40,000 pages from the earlier editions of the magazine.[11] The magazine states on its website that it "remains committed to the ideals of individual liberty unmediated by the State or any other institution, freedom of expression and enterprise, national interest, and India's vast and ancient cultural heritage". Swarajya describes itself as "a big tent for liberal right of centre discourse that reaches out, engages and caters to the new India".[1]
