The Amazing Race Australia 3 is the third series of The Amazing Race Australia, the Australian version of The Amazing Race. Officially titled The Amazing Race Australia v New Zealand, the race featured ten teams of two (five from Australia and five from New Zealand), each in a pre-existing relationship, in a race around the world for a A$250,000 grand prize.

The show has a premiere date for Australia's Seven Network for 4 August 2014 after The X-Factor's Monday show. New Zealand's TV2 has the premiere date for 5 August 2014 after its airing of My Kitchen Rules 5.

Australian intensive care nurses Daniel Little & Ryan Thomas were the winners of the Race.

Production

Development and filming

The starting line for The Amazing Race Australia v New Zealand takes place near Uluru (also known as Ayers Rock) in Uluṟu-Kata Tjuṯa National Park.

On 14 August 2012, the Seven Network announced the show was looking for contestants for its third series.[1] Despite calling for contestant applications, the show was absent in the Seven Network's 2013 Upfronts and was replaced by an unsuccessful revival of the Australian version of The Mole.[2]

The show was then renewed again on 22 October 2013.[3] It was also announced that Seven's in-house production company, Seven Productions would produce the season and activeTV would not be involved, unlike the previous two seasons.[4]

Filming began in March 2014 at Uluru in Uluru-Kata Tjuta National Park. The race will travel across six continents and ten countries and will be over 90,000 kilometres (56,000 mi) long;[5] it is the first time that one of the international spin-offs of The Amazing Race has traveled to all six inhabited continents and the race course is the longest amongst the spin-offs (third overall behind two of the American version's race courses).

The Speed Bump was introduced for this series, replacing Marked for elimination, it required a team that finished last in a non-elimination leg to perform an additional task at some point during the next leg. The Express Pass, returned for the first time since the first series, allowing the team that places first in the first leg to skip any later task in the race.[6] The Salvage Pass also returned however it was awarded to the team that arrived first in the sixth leg rather than the first.

Casting

Applications for the third series originally opened during the second series despite the show not being officially renewed by Seven Network. Later when the show was officially renewed for 2014, applications opened again with the show now being opened to citizens of New Zealand. Applicants who applied previously were given the chance to update their application or leave it as it was. This second round of Applications ended on 22 December 2013.

Jesse O'Brien was previously a contestant on the first season of New Zealand Idol which also aired on TV2 and withdrew to attend to the birth of his daughter before returning for the second season where he placed 4th.[7]

Elizabeth Grant was injured in episode 2 of the race. Tyson Smith proposed to Sally Yamamoto on episode 6 of the race which was on their 4th anniversary.

  • A green ƒ indicates that the team won a Fast Forward.
  • An underlined leg number indicates that there was no mandatory rest period at the Pit Stop and all teams were ordered to continue racing. An underlined team placement indicates that the team came in last on a "continue racing" leg and was ordered to continue racing.
  • An underlined blue team's placement indicates that the team came in last on a non-elimination leg and had to perform a Speed Bump during the next leg of the race.

  1. ^a b John & Murray were subject to various placement changes on the second leg of the race:
    • They departed the Pit Start in Christchurch 1 hour late because they overslept and missed their departure time. Four teams departed in their place until they woke up and departed in 5th place.
    • They used their Express Pass to bypass the Roadblock on Leg 2. Neither of them were shown choosing to perform the Roadblock, so it is not counted towards their Roadblock count.
    • They initially arrived at the Pit Stop in 1st, but had not paid their tuk-tuk driver. They were required to settle the bill before being allowed to check in. During that time, Emily & Jono checked in for a 1st-place finish, dropping them to 2nd.
  2. ^ Daniel & Ryan received a 30-minute time credit at the start of Leg 3 for doing the best in the step counter task in Leg 2. With their time-credit they departed in 1st.
  3. ^a b Carla & Hereni used their Express Pass to bypass the Roadblock in Leg 4. Before using the Express Pass, Carla elected to perform the Roadblock, and this is reflected in the total Roadblock count.

Prizes

Prizes were awarded throughout the race, generally to the first placing team for each leg, but also for special tasks that took place thougout the race. Most prizes were sponsored by Virgin Australia and their affiliated products.

  • Leg 1 – Two Express Passes – an item that can be used on the race to skip any one task of the team's choosing up until the fifth leg of the race. The winning team keeps one for themselves but must relinquish the second to another team before the end of the third leg of the race. Also two Business Class tickets flight to Los Angeles.
  • Leg 2 – A$10,000 voucher and 2 frequent flyer cards.
    • Step Counter Task: A 30-minute head start for leg 3. Awarded to Daniel & Ryan.
  • Leg 3 – Two tickets with Virgin and codeshare partners Etihad Airways to one of their European destinations and A$5,000 spending money.
  • Leg 4 – 500,000 Velocity Frequent Flyer Points which they can use on any Velocity reward of their choosing.
  • Leg 5 – First class tickets train tickets to their next destination for themselves and a team of their choice.
  • Leg 6 – A 5 star, 7 night holiday for 2 to Phuket, Thailand from Virgin Holidays and Salvage Pass – which has the power to give the holder an hour time-credit or to save the last placing team from elimination.
  • Leg 7 – Two Business Class tickets flight to Abu Dhabi.

Leg 1 (Australia → New Zealand)

On the first leg of the race, teams white-water rafted down New Zealand's Rangitata River.

Airdate: 4 August 2014 (AU); 5 August 2014 (NZ)

The starting line of the third series of The Amazing Race Australia began in Uluṟu-Kata Tjuṯa National Park with 10 teams (5 Australian teams and 5 New Zealander teams representing in their perspective nations). They had began their first task: teams were divided into five teams of two groups competed in a "Trans-Tasman tug of war". Once the side was able to grab their national flag from below the rope, they were given a 10-minute head-start to the airport, while the losing side had to wait out the 10 minutes before being allowed to start the race. They also picked up their next clue at the top of the backpacks for their first destination: Christchurch, New Zealand with two provided flights available.

Upon arriving in Christchurch, teams headed to Cardboard Cathedral where they had to pick one of three departure time tickets for the following morning, 8:00am, 8:15am or 8:30am. The next morning, teams had to find these marked vehicles and found a clue above on a windshield, instructing them to travel to Rangitata Rafts at Rangitata River where they had to raft down grade 5 rapids and find one half of a ring from The Lord of the Rings buried in the sand.

The clue sending teams headed to Rata Peaks Station for their next clue, and that was the Roadblock where they asking "Who's got better traction?". One team member had to navigate a tractor through a course and move 4 bales of hay into the marked area. Once this had been completed, they had to go to a sheep paddock and find the sheep with the exact match of the other half of the ring from the rafting challenge. The clue following the Roadblock, teams had to join the two rings together to reveal their next clue, instructing them to "Go west to the Pit Stop", and leaving to figure out their next location is at the western direction of Southern Alps.

Leg 2 (New Zealand → Cambodia)

For the Roadblock in Cambodia, teams visited Angkor Wat where they counted the temple's monks.

Airdate: 11 August 2014 (AU); 12 August 2014 (NZ)

The leg began teams informed to fly to their next destination: Siem Reap, Cambodia. Upon arrival, teams went to old market known locally as Psah Chas where each team member had to eat a total of seven fried tarantulas, with individual team members required to eat at least three. Once complete, the street vendor would give them their next clue.

The clue instructed teams headed to the famous Angkor Wat temple where they had to buy tickets at an information center. In addition, they would also receive a step counter that they had to wear for the rest of the leg. The next morning, teams received their clue and was for the Roadblock, asking "Who is the zen master?". One team member had to count number of monks wearing red and yellow necklaces. Once all monks were counted, they collected an offering to present to two other monks inside of the temple. The racer would have to pick one of the two monks to give the answer to, but one of the monks would lie if the racer had the right answer anyway. Once the truth-telling monk was told the correct answer, he would give them their next clue.

The clue after the Roadblock teams sent them to Tjoup Snae Restaurant where they mark down the reading that their step counter had accumulated so far. The team that had the two closest amounts of steps between each team member would receive a special prize at the end of the leg.

The clue was for the Detour, given the choice between Shrimp and Shoot. In Shrimp, teams had to collect shrimp from fish traps in the Tonlé Sap using traditional methods, reaching a total of 750 grams (26 oz) of shrimp. Once they had enough, the fisherman would hand over their next clue. In Shoot, teams had to travel to the floating village of Chong Khneas and find the local pool hall, where they had to level out a pool table and then sink five balls while competing against a local player to receive their next clue. Both clues directing them to the Pit Stop at Baphuon.

Leg 3 (Cambodia → Thailand)

Airdate: 18 August 2014 (AU); 19 August 2014 (NZ)

The leg started in Baphuon, where the previous Pit Stop located, teams opened their next clue and instructing them to take by taxi to the border crossing in Poipet and cross it on foot, before taking a bus to Bangkok, Thailand. Once in Bangkok, teams went to a travel agency and had to pick up a ticket for their next destination: Krabi, on the Andaman coast.

Upon arriving in Krabi, teams went to Golden Beach Resort Massage Parlour where they had to choose a Thai massage treatment from the board, written entirely in Thai. Some treatments took much longer than others, so it was down to teams to pick the shortest treatment possible. Whatever the massage could finish with no pain, a masseuse would receive their next clue.

The clue was for the Detour, a choice between Climb Up and Drill Down. Both Detour options required teams to travel by longtail boat to Phra Nang Beach. In Climb Up, teams had to scale a sheer rock face to retrieve a race flag. Once both team members had obtained a flag, they could exchange their flags for their next clue. They climbed with Real Rocks Climbing School located in Railay Beach, under the expertise of a local climber named Tik who oversaw all the challenges. In Drill Down, teams had to first build a hand drill and then use it to extract enough coconut juice from a pile of coconuts to fill a container to a marked line. Once the juice reached the line, they received their next clue.

The clues after the Detour instructed teams headed for the U-Turn board, and their next clue. John & Murray chose to U-Turn Sally & Tyson. The clue was for the Roadblock asking, "Who's more likely to clam up?". Teams made their way to Chicken Island where one team member had to travel to a marked area of the sea in their boat and dive down to retrieve golden clams from the seafloor. Some clams contained pearls which when opened, contained their next clue, sending them to the island of Koh Poda for the Pit Stop.

Leg 4 (Thailand → Namibia)

While in Namibia, teams had to sing in a local San language with the Bushmen children.

Airdate: 25 August 2014 (AU); 26 August 2014 (NZ)

At the start of the leg, teams were informed to travel to Windhoek, Namibia. Upon arrival in Windhoek, teams headed to Na'an Kuse Wildlife Sanctuary where they had to lead two baboons along a marked path. Once both baboons made it along the path, teams received their next clue.

The clue was for the Roadblock and asking "Who's got a healthy appetite?". One team member had to cut up a pile of offal and prepare the correct quantity, using an example, to feed to a pride of lions. Once they had fed all their meat to the lions and returned with empty buckets, they would receive their next clue.

The post-Roadblock clue instructed teams headed to the Bush School where they had to learn a song in the local San language and perform it with the Bushmen children to receive their next clue. The clue was for the Detour and given the teams choice between Pipe and Poo. Both Detour options required teams to travel to a local village by donkey cart. In Pipe, teams had to use a traditional method of making fire. Once they had built enough of a fire to allow the village chief to light his pipe, they would receive their next clue. In Poo, each team member had to participate in a local game called bokdrool, which required them to spit pellets made up of elephant dung across a line which was Lua error in Module:Convert at line 272: attempt to index local 'cat' (a nil value). away from their start point. Once each member made it across the line, they received their next clue. The clues sent teams to the Pit Stop at the base of Watering Hole.

Leg 5 (Namibia → Russia)

The Church of the Saviour on Spilled Blood in Saint Petersburg is the fifth Pit Stop of the Race.

Airdate: 25 August 2014 (AU); 2 September 2014 (NZ)

The leg started teams instructed to travel their next destination: Saint Petersburg, Russia. Upon arrival, they had to head to Battleship Aurora for their next clue. The clue was for the Roadblock asking "Who's ready to crack the code?". One team member had to decipher the message which was being communicated by the ship commander from the top of the battleship in semaphore. The message was written in Russian Cyrillic alphabet and transliterate it to Roman alphabet. Once the message was deciphered (Russian: Не́вский проспе́кт, tr. Nevskiy Prospekt), teams received their next clue.

The clue received at the Roadblock was simply a photograph of Kazan Cathedral, leaving teams to figure out that their next destination was Nevsky Prospect and search the cathedral for their next clue, a Detour where teams had a choice between Cossack and Coat Rack. Both Detours must travel to Beloselsky-Belozersky Palace. In Cossack, teams had to learn the traditional Cossack dance. Once the instructor is satisfied with their effort, they received their next clue. In Coat Rack, teams had to search through a pile of over three hundred tags to find the one that is missing. They had to then search the coats in the coat room for the missing tag. Once they handed the correct missing tag to the attendant, she would hand them their next clue.

The post-Detour clues instructed teams to head to Taleon Imperial Hotel and find the Imperial Ballroom to encounter with an Intersection board. One member from each of the intersected teams had to enter a vault full of highly sensitive lasers to retrieve a jewelled egg. Once they got the egg, they would find a gold figurine of Church of the Saviour on Spilled Blood inside it, leaving teams to figure out that it was the location of their next Pit Stop. However, teams were informed the next leg began immediately.

Leg 6 (Russia)

This leg's "Nation vs. Nation" had teams playing with Russia's traditional doll, the matryoshka.

Airdate: 1 September 2014 (AU); 9 September 2014 (NZ)

At the Pit Stop in Saint Petersburg, teams were automatically given their next clue, instructing them to travel by train to Kostroma, at the base of Volga River. Upon arrival in Kostroma, teams had to go to Museum of Wooden Architecture where they would face on "Nation vs. Nation" task. Each team would select a matryoshka doll and then had to search among hundreds of other nesting dolls in five separate houses to find the four smaller pieces that belonged with the one they had chosen. Once all members of their country's team had completed their matryoshka dolls, they would all receive their next clue.

The clue sent teams to the Town Square for their next clue, which was for the Detour, given their choice between Boil and Build. Both Detours must travel to the service In Boil, teams would have to fill a Russian outdoor bathing kettle with water until it reached the marked line, and also use wood and paper scraps to light a fire underneath it. Once the kettle was full and the fire was going, teams had to submerge themselves in the icy water before receiving their next clue. In Build, teams would have to stack all of the provided firewood following the traditional method. Their stack had to completely fill the marked area. Once their stack was complete, teams would get their next clue.

The clue was eventually discovered for the Roadblock and asking "Who wants to go with the dogs?". Teams must travel to the sled dog center where one team member would have to ride a dog sled with the Siberian Husky and Alaskan Malamutes around a slalom course through the forest to receive their next clue, instructing them to the next Pit Stop overlooking Ipatiev Monastery.

Leg 7 (Russia → Portugal)

Upon arriving at Lisbon, teams visited Belém Tower and perform a Fado song.

Airdate: 8 September 2014 (AU); 16 September 2014 (NZ)

Teams would be transported from the previous Pit Stop from Kostroma to the Russian capital of Moscow, and departed from in front of the Orekhovo-Borisovo Metochion, they were given their next clue, instructing them to fly to Lisbon, Portugal. Upon arrival in Lisbon, teams made their way to the famous Belém Tower where they had to memorise and perform a traditional Portuguese song, Fado do Cansaço. If they could sing all of the Portuguese words correctly with proper musical timing, they would receive their next clue from the famous Fado singer Cuca Roseta. If not, they would have to start the song over.

The clue teams instructed to ride the city's trolley #28 from Fábrica Sant'Anna to Largo das Portas do Sol and where they find their next clue, and it was for the Detour, given the choice between Wet and Dry. In Wet, teams made their way to a section of the Lisbon streets celebrating the Agitagueda Art Festival, where thousands of umbrellas were hung above the streets. Teams would be tasked with counting all of the yellow umbrella (297). When they wrote the correct answer on a chalkboard and presented it to a judge at a café in Rua da Regueira, they would get their next clue. In Dry, teams had to find a group of women on the streets and receive a laundry basket from them with their name attached. They then had to search among the clotheslines above the nearby streets for one article of clothing to another with the same name tag. If the clothing is found, a resident would receive their next clue.

The clue following the Detour teams had to go to Largo do Chafariz de Dentro and locate sport cars across Museu do Fado (Portuguese) for their next clue, instructing them to head to Praia dos Pescadores (known as "Fisherman's Beach") in Cascais. Upon arrival, they had found out with the Roadblock, and asking "Who's a good catch?". One team member had to pick up a large fish, mussels and octopi and carry them across town to Restaurante A Económica. They had to bring at least 5 kilograms (11 lb) of octopus with them. Once they delivered their seafood, they would then be served a traditional Portuguese fish stew, cataplana, which they had to eat to earn their next clue. The clue sending them to the Pit Stop at Sintra's Pena National Palace.

Leg 8 (Portugal → Croatia)

This leg of the race mainly focused on the Dubrovnik's Old Town.

Airdate: 15 September 2014 (AU); 23 September 2014 (NZ)

At the start of the leg, teams were told to fly to Dubrovnik, Croatia. Once in Dubrovnik, they had to head to Ploča Gate where they had to carry two stones through Dubrovnik's main street and up to Watchman's Keep at Minčeta Tower. Once there, they had to climb the number of stairs to the city guard where asked his question ("How many steps did you count to reach me?"). Then they had to write the right answer on a chalkboard (139), he would get with their next clue. The clue instructed teams headed to the Old Harbour where they had to sign up for one of three departure times, each fifteen minutes apart started at 8:30 am.

The next morning, teams were given their next clue, encountering with the Fast Forward and Route Info clues. For the Fast Forward, one team had to travel to Dominican Monastery and collect three prayer cards from three different local churches, then deliver them to Muški Frizerski Salon to get a tonsure haircut (for men) or a nun haircut (for women). Once both team member's hair had been cut, they would receive their Fast Forward clue.

For the Speed Bump, Ashleigh & Jarrod had to travel nearby Dubrovnik Cathedral and both properly knot a necktie on each other (one was a bow tie and the other was a four-in-hand), once they were done, they could go to their next destination: Big Onofrio Fountain and had to search their next clue, which was for the Roadblock asking "Who's always looking ahead?". Teams must go to Fort Bokar where one team member had to abseil face-first jumping down the side of the fort to receive their next clue.

The clue received after the Roadblock where they had to walk along the city walls back to the south gate of the Old Harbour for their next clue, instructing them to Fort Saint John and was soon found another Roadblock, the team asking "Who's a social climber?". The team member who did not perform the previous Roadblock had to climb up the fort to receive their next clue. The clue directed teams to walk to Fort St. Lawrence, the Pit Stop of this leg of the Race.

Leg 9 (Croatia → Argentina)

In Buenos Aires, teams visited El Ateneo Grand Splendid, a former theater that was turned into a bookstore.

Airdate: 15 September 2014 (AU); 30 September 2014 (NZ)

At the start of the leg, teams were told their next destination was Buenos Aires, the capital of Argentina. Upon arriving in Buenos Aires, they had to head to Estancia Las Bétulas, a picturesque polo ranch located in Luján, at the heart of Argentine countryside and searched with their next clue, the Roadblock and asking "Who wants to horse around?". One team member had to direct a horse-drawn carriage to a marked polo field. Then, they had to prepare a polo horse for competition by properly dressing and saddling it with precision and concentration. They had to pass inspection by a local polo player in order to receive their next clue.

The clue after the Roadblock teams instructed to find to Buenos Aires' "most dramatic bookstore", leading them to figure out it to El Ateneo Grand Splendid, a former theatre which is converted to bookstore, and had to search with their next clue. The clue was for the Detour, given the choice between the cultural heritage in Argentina's history: Tango and Tribute. In both tasks, teams had to begin the task by picking up a specific book from off of the nearby table. In Tango, teams had to make their way to Pasaje de la Defensa, where both team members had to learn how to perform a complex Tango routine. If they could dance to the satisfaction of a judge, teams would get their next clue. In Tribute, teams had to search the specific page of their book for a location. First, they would travel to Diego Maradona's home stadium: La Bombonera. There, they would find a football player who would ask them a question in Spanish and asking ("Find in the book the hospital where Diego Maradona was born and come back with the answer"; "Encuentra en el libro el hospital donde nació Diego Maradona y volver con la respuesta"). The answer was Hospital Interzonal General de Agudos Evita, and he would hand them a picture of Evita Perón directing them to the site of her grave: La Recoleta Cemetery. There, they would find their next clue.

The clues following the Detour sending teams to head to Argentina Rowing Club in Tigre where they would have to row a canoe upriver to the Pit Stop at the Tigre Rowing Club.

Leg 10 (Argentina → United States → Australia)

Loch Ard Gorge in Port Campbell National Park, was the site of the final Roadblock and the finish line of The Amazing Race Australia v New Zealand.

The leg began teams informed to head to Los Angeles, California. Once in Los Angeles, teams made their way to Hollywood Walk of Fame in Hollywood Boulevard where they had to get a photo with three movie characters that were portrayed by Australian-born actors. Then teams had to check the photos at Ray's Photo Lab. If the photos are correct, they will give their next clue, sending them to Pink's Hot Dogs and teams had to eat a traditional Pink's hot dog in order to get their next clue. The clue instructed them to fly to their final destination city: Melbourne.

For the flight from Los Angeles to Melbourne, all teams were given a free upgrade to Virgin Australia's business class. Teams were given a challenge to name the locations on the Virgin Australia's route map. The best performing team on this task won a special prize. Upon arriving in Melbourne, teams went to Moorabbin Airport and they had to take a helicopter to Great Otway National Park.

At the Great Otway National Park, teams had to search the Otway Fly Treetop Walk for their next clue, that was located at its cantilever where they instructed to begin a "Air, Land & Sea" task within all elements. For the first task, teams had to search from their helicopter overlooking the Twelve Apostles and search a boat on the land with the word "Loch" on it. If they found this word, they would be set down and must go to a dock to find a local fisherman at the fishing docks, who will give them their next clue for the second task where they had to find the second item "Ard" in a large sandcastle, then teams had to paddle out to Port Campbell Creek and collect their third item "Gorge". At the end of the task, they had to figure out the next location based on the items they found, and refers to Loch Ard Gorge, their next destination.

The clue found out was the Roadblock, asking "Who's got an eye for detail?". One team member had to match an item above the barrels that worn or used by each Pit Stop greeters encountered throughout the race and placed them in correct order of their respective country. Once they finished, they will receive their final clue, instructing them to travel by foot to Muttonbird Island Lookout for the Finish Line.

Australian Ratings

All ratings data in Australia are taken from the 5 major metropolitan centres. Data from regional areas is not accounted for. Due to poor programming from 7 there is no set time-slot but the start time for the show is around 8:40PM to 9:10PM. Times are taken from Electronic Programming Guides which still may not be accurate to the real start time. Despite the lower ratings compared to the previous seasons, the show very rated well in time shift, often being among the highest viewership gainers for the night.
