The Institute of Contemporary Music Performance (formerly known as the Guitar Institute and ICMP), is an independent, specialist music education provider located in London, UK.[1] They offer courses in guitar, bass, drums, vocals, music business and songwriting.[2] Notable alumni include Radiohead guitarist Ed O'Brien, Paloma Faith bassist Andrea Goldsworthy and RnB artist Loick Essien.[3]

History

Founded in 1985, by session guitarist Alan Limbrick, the Institute was originally known as Guitartech™ & Basstech™, and was focused exclusively on training and developing guitarists and bassists.[4] The 'tech' names were later dropped and the Institute retained the 'Guitar Institute' name. The school now also offers courses in drums, vocals, songwriting and music business.[5]

Courses and accreditation

The school runs courses specialising in guitar, drums, bass, vocals, songwriting and music business. These disciplines are available to study within a number of qualifications, each of which are accredited in a slightly different way.

The school validates its own Higher Diploma qualification. The awarding body is Edexcel.[6]

The Diploma course is delivered in partnership with the College of Northwest London. The validating body is Edexcel.[7]

The BMus (Hons) (Bachelor of Music) in Popular Music Performance is validated by the University of East London.[8]

The Foundation Degree in Creative Musicianship (Foundation Degree) was launched in September 2010 and is validated by Middlesex University.[9][10]

The Professional Diploma in Songwriting is sponsored by Columbia Records.[11]

The specialist teacher training course (PTLLS) was announced in June 2011. It will be delivered by professional educators, leading to a Level 4 Award, the first step towards gaining Qualified Teacher Status (QTS) [12]
