Tobias Read (born 1975) is an American Democratic politician who is a current member of the Oregon House of Representatives, representing District 27 since 2006, which comprises parts of Beaverton, southwest Portland, and unincorporated Multnomah and Washington Counties. Tobias is serving his fifth term as State Representative during Oregon's 78th Legislature. His notable campaign slogan is, "Leadership for the Long Run." Tobias currently serves as Speaker Pro Tempore. He was formerly the Democratic Majority Whip.

Tobias Read announced he is running for Oregon State Treasurer in 2016. Current State Treasurer Ted Wheeler is term-limited from running in 2016.

Legislative Accomplishments

Full Day Kindergarten

Children who attend full day kindergarten programs achieve more in reading and math, and exhibit more independent learning, classroom involvement, and productivity in work with peers. That’s why Tobias carried the Full-Day Kindergarten Bill to passage, making this program the norm.

Rainy Day Fund

Tobias led the charge to establish the Rainy Day Fund in 2009. When times are tough, the Rainy Day Fund will help Oregonians maintain funding for schools and critical services.

Oregon Innovation Council

Throughout his time in the legislature, Tobias has championed the Oregon Innovation Council, a private-sector led process that connects innovation with job creation. By building industry clusters in fields like nanotechnology, clean-tech, green building, and electric vehicles, Oregon InC creates good-paying jobs right here at home.

Infrastructure and the West Coast Infrastructure Exchange

Tobias championed House Bill 4111 in order to address Oregon's infrastructure needs. The bill connects private-sector experience with public sector standards and confirms Oregon’s participation in the West Coast Infrastructure Exchange.

Cy-Près Corporate Accountability Bill

Before House Bill 2700 passed in the 2015 legislative session, Oregon was one of only two states in the nation that sent unclaimed damages in a class action lawsuit back to corporate wrongdoers. Tobias Read successfully secured the passage of the Cy-Près Corporate Accountability Bill, redirecting those funds instead to legal aid and to a “next best” nonprofit directly related to the case.

Retirement Security

Nearly half of all Oregonians have less than $25,000 saved for retirement. Tobias Read developed the Save Today, Secure Tomorrow legislation, creating the Oregon Retirement Savings Board. The Board will have the opportunity to create and implement a retirement savings plan for those who lack access to a plan at their workplace. This important financial planning tool will help Oregonians take control of their own financial futures.

District

House District 27 runs from the Raleigh Hills neighborhood in the northeast, to the Murrayhill neighborhood in the southwest. It covers parts of the cities of Beaverton and Portland, as well as areas of unincorporated Washington and Multnomah counties.

District 27 is the home to many schools and educational services. Kids in the district tend to be students in the Beaverton School District, and many district residents work at international companies like Nike (one of two Fortune 500 companies headquartered in Oregon)[1] and Intel (Oregon’s largest employer)[1] as well as the small businesses that form the base of Oregon’s economy. Washington County as a whole is often described as the economic engine of the state[1] since a great percentage of the state’s income tax revenue is generated by taxpayers in the county.

Personal life

Rep. Read graduated in 1997 from Willamette University in Salem, Oregon, with a bachelor's degree in politics and economics, followed by a MBA from the University of Washington in Seattle in 2003.[2] That year he started working for Nike, Inc. in footwear development, where he remained until 2012.[2] He is married and has two children.[2]
