There are currently nine universities in Wales which have the authority to award academic degrees. Welsh universities have the power to award degrees at all levels: undergraduate, masters, and doctoral. Education in Wales is controlled by the Welsh Government under the terms of the Government of Wales Act 2006. The minister responsible for higher education is the Minister for Education & Skills, currently Huw Lewis AM of the Labour Party. University status in Wales and throughout the United Kingdom today is conferred by the Privy Council which takes advice from the Quality Assurance Agency for Higher Education.[1][2]

In the 2013-14 Times Higher Education World University Rankings, three Welsh universities are among the top 400 worldwide: Cardiff University (at 201 - 225), Aberystwyth University (at 301 - 350), and Bangor University (at 301 - 350). [3] The 2013 Academic Ranking of World Universities only ranks one Welsh university amongst its top 400 - Cardiff University at 101 - 150. [4]

All Welsh universities are public universities and funded by the Welsh Government (through its Higher Education Funding Council for Wales) and financial support is provided for Welsh-domiciled students by the Student Finance Wales. Students ordinarily resident in Wales or the European Union do not pay tuition fees for their first undergraduate degree, but tuition fees are charged for those from the rest of the United Kingdom. All students are required to pay tuition fees for postgraduate education (e.g. MSc, PhD), except in certain priority areas funded by the Welsh Government, or if another source of funding can be found (e.g. research council studentship for a PhD).
