Warm Springs extension route

Warm Springs / South Fremont[1] (originally simply Warm Springs) is an at-grade BART station under construction in the Warm Springs district of Fremont. It is not certain when the station will open. Differing reports indicate it will open in 2016, either in spring,[2] summer,[3][4] early December,[5] or in late December.[6] On the other hand, others report that no time frame has been set for opening.[7][8] Service will terminate at Warm Springs until the Berryessa and Milpitas stations open, extending the line farther south.

History of construction

Construction of the Warm Springs extension began in 2009,[12] but the opening was delayed.[13] In early 2011, the start of revenue service was targeted for late 2014;[14] from late 2011 to mid-2015,[15] opening was scheduled for the end of 2015.[16][17] In June 2015, the opening was expected in early 2016,[18] but as of September of that year the schedule was no longer available and hard to predict.[19] In November 2015, the third rail was powered on,[20] but the physical completion of construction was delayed until spring 2016.[21][22] Testing began in spring 2015,[23] and dynamic testing began in January 2016.[3] Systems testing had been expected to take nine months,[24] but took longer than forecasted.[13]

In 2011 the city of Fremont approved $US 90,000 to lobby against construction of a Union Pacific rail yard adjacent to the station, arguing that the rail yard would hinder transit oriented development.[25] A pedestrian and bicycle bridge providing access to the west side of the station was approved by the city in February 2016.[26]

BART expansion project

This station is the southern end of the under construction BART Warm Springs BART extension, which adds 5.4 miles (8.7 km) of track from the existing Fremont BART station, including a subway under man-made Lake Elizabeth and Fremont Central Park. South of Central Park, the line parallels the existing at-grade right-of-way belonging to Union Pacific. Major crossings of both Union Pacific and BART, such as Paseo Padre Parkway and Washington Boulevard, are grade separated. Construction of the underground segment of the line was completed in 2012.

Construction of the extension to San Jose from the Warm Springs / South Fremont station began in summer 2012, with Milpitas and Berryessa stations planned to open in 2018.
