Overview
The center explores developments in contemporary art worldwide and presents them through curated exhibitions, symposia, live events, educational programs, and a publishing arm.[3] It is housed in a former school building on the Witte de Withstraat, a street in Rotterdam.[4]
History
Witte de With was established on January 27, 1990 as a center for contemporary art with the mission of introducing international contemporary art and theory in the context of the City of Rotterdam as well as the Netherlands. The institution initially sought to present an alternative to both the classic museum for modern art and existing artists’ initiatives. Witte de With celebrated its 25th year anniversary in 2015.[5]
Directors
Witte de With's part directors include: Chris Dercon (1990–1995), Bartomeu Marl (1996–2001), Catherine David (2002–2005), first as director later as head curator, and Nicolas Schafhausen (2006–2011). Defne Ayas has been director of Witte de With since January 2012.[6]
Exhibition History
Witte de With Center for Contemporary Art has presented exhibitions by more than 300 artists -both established and emerging-, and numerous platforms with international and nationwide partners to critical acclaim.
