- July 3 - The home of Gerry Fitt, a former Social Democratic and Labour Party Member of Parliament, is fire-bombed by members of the Provisional Irish Republican Army in West Belfast, Northern Ireland.
- September 25 - Thirty-eight members of the Provisional IRA escape in a mass jailbreak from Maze prison in Belfast, Northern Ireland, resulting in the death of a prison guard and several others injured.
- December 7 - Edgar Graham, (Ulster Unionist Party (UUP) politician and academic, was shot and killed at Queen's University, Belfast by a member of the Provisional IRA, allegedly for his involvement in the prison and police services.
- December 17 - A Provisional IRA car bomb kills six and injures over 90 people outside Harrods department store in London, England.
