On 20 February 2016, 4 Kashmir militants armed with automatic weapons attacked an Indian army parliamentary convoy on the main road linking Srinagar to Jammu, killing two soldiers and a civilian. The militants then took refuge in the government-run Entrepreneurship Development Institute[1] in Pampore. The militants allowed 120 civilian employees to vacate the building.

The Indian Army and special forces cordoned off the building and fired mortar bombs. The militants responded with automatic gunfire and hand grenades. During the ensuing battle, three Indian soldiers, including two captains and a special forces operator were killed. A militant also died.[2] Part of the EDI building caught on fire.[3]

The next day, Indian troops launched a final assault against the militants held up in the EDI building. Reconnaissance drones were used in preparation for the assault.[4] The three-day stand-off ended with the deaths of all three of the remaining militants.[5]
