She was first elected in 2010, but was defeated in the 2012 primary election by fellow incumbent Jose Felix Diaz,[1] after redistricting drew her into the same Kendall-based district as Diaz.[2]

Before being elected Rivas served from 2004 through 2010 on Miami-Dade County School Board. She earned her Bachelor's degree in Computer Science from Florida International University and a Master's Degree in the same discipline from Nova Southeastern University.[3]
