The banknotes of Somaliland were first issued on 18 October 1994, the same year that the 1 Somaliland shilling coin was issued.[1] The banknotes are issued by the Bank of Somaliland (Baanka Somaliland). The notes are issued in 5, 10, 20, 50, 100, and 500 shillings. In 2012, two new denominations were introduced. These notes are dated 2011, and are issued in 1000 and 5000 shillings.

in silver letters to commemorate the fifth anniversary of gaining de facto independence. However, whether these "commemorative" notes were overprinted by the Somaliland authority or by numismatic merchant is unclear.
