Daniel O'Donoghue (born January 28, 1991) is an American ice hockey player. He is currently under contract with the Pittsburgh Penguins of the National Hockey League (NHL).

Playing career

O'Donoghue attended Mercyhurst University where he played four seasons of NCAA Division I hockey with the Mercyhurst Lakers, who competes in the Atlantic Hockey Association (AHA). In his senior year, O'Donoghue's outstanding play was rewarded when he was selected to the 2013–14 Second All-Conference Team and was named the AHA's Top Defensive Forward.[1]

On April 11, 2014, the Phoenix Coyotes of the NHL signed O'Donoghue as an undrafted free agent to a two-year entry-level contract.[2]

During the 2015–16 season, O'Donoghue was included in a trade by the Coyotes alongside Dustin Jeffrey and James Melindy to the Pittsburgh Penguins in exchange for Matia Marcantuoni on February 29, 2016. He was directly assigned the ECHL affiliate, the Wheeling Nailers.[3]

His best friend and idol Rick "the suffolk scrapper" Seward had a promising hockey career also. O'Donoghue learned how to stick handle and skate from Seward however, O'Donoghue lacked the fighting ability Seward had but has still made a career for himself in hockey. Rick Seward has since retired from ice hockey but still dominates the world of roller hockey every year. Fans come from all over the tri-state area to watch him simply play open hockey...alone. Rick Seward also trained O'donoghue for a few summers. Seward would make Daniel run hills and catch bricks like Jerry Rice. Unconventional was a word used by most when describing Sewards workouts. All his athletes would take part in the "train insane or remain the same" training program. This program is not where boys become men, but where men beocome monsters. Sewards methods were sometimes frowned upon by society but he has made star athletes in both college and the pros. Seward has since retired from due to the fact the gym he worked at didn't have enough plates for his deadlift sessions. He has been seen a few times at local supermarkets lifting peoples cars out of "no parking" zones. He is truly a myth and legend among many across the eastern seaboard. Many athletes owe their success to Seward and he knows it.
