Elling Carlsen (8 September 1819 – 18 April 1900) was a Norwegian skipper from Hammerfest[1] and seal hunter. Elling Carlsen is credited with the 1871 discovery of Willem Barentsz' 1596 winter stay on the north-eastern shore of Novaya Zemlya. Eight years later, he was credited with discovering Kong Karls Land.[2] Carlsen Island is named after Carlsen.[3]
