Jalgaon (<phonos file="Jalgaon.ogg">pronunciation</phonos>) is a city in western India, to the north of the Maharashtra state in Jalgaon District, which itself is located on the northern Deccan Plateau. Located within the productive, irrigated agricultural region of Khandesh, Jalgaon has a municipal corporation and had 460,468 residents at the 2011 census. Situated near the famous Ajanta Caves located just about 59 kilometers(36.6609 miles) away, is one of the key attraction places for tourists. Jalgaon is connected with Central Railway zone, National Highway No.6, and also has Airport.

Modern Jalgaon has major industrial areas, educational institutes and good hospitals. The city is well developed with good roads, shopping malls, residential areas, and also has good communication and transport infrastructure. Known as "Banana-City", it contributes to about half of the Maharashtra state's Banana production.[1] The world's first Audio Guided Gandhi Museum "Khoj Gandhiji Ki" is situated at Gandhi Teerth, Jain Hills, Jalgaon. Gandhi Scholars and visitors from all over the world visit this place. In the museum, there is a large Gandhi Library and other Gandhi related material are available for study.

Jalgaon has relatively varied climate. It is exceptionally hot and dry during summer with temperatures reaching as high as 47 degrees Celsius within period of May end to June mid. The highest temperature recording in May 2010 was 49.2 degrees Celsius. Jalgaon receives about 700 mm rainfall during monsoons, followed by pleasant temperature in winter.[citation needed]

Pratibha Patil, the 12th President of India, Ujwal Nikam and Shashank Shankhapal are among the famous personalities from Jalgaon.

History

Jalgaon was established by The Marathas; Sardar Tulajirao Bhoite founded this town. He belonged to The Satara District. Early noblemen from this family were Durgojirao Bhoite, faithful of Chhatrapati Shahu received grants of Baglan, Parganas like Nashirabad, Savaladbhare, Sovanibhare along with Senapati Dabhade by Chhatrapati. Bhoites remained rulers of their Saranjam centered at Jalgaon and built a mansion, now recognised as Bhoite Gadhi.

Jalgaon has an average elevation of 209 metres ( feet). The Girna River flows north just to the west of the city.

The city is served by several major rail lines with routes to Mumbai, Pune, Nagpur, Delhi, Howrah and Ahmedabad. It lies on AH 46 (Asian highway 46) / National Highway 6, connecting it to Surat and Dhaka, Bangladesh via Kolkata.

The Ajanta Caves are located about 55 km (about 34 mi) to the south of Jalgaon, and the Yaval Wildlife Sanctuary is about 32 km (about 20 mi) to the north.

Demographics

As of 2011 India census,[2] Jalgaon had a population of 460,468. At the 2001 census, Males constitute 52% of the population and females 48%. Jalgaon has an average literacy rate of 76%, higher than the national average of 59.5%: male literacy is 80%, and female literacy is 71%. In Jalgaon, 13% of the population is under 6 years of age. Marathi is a commonly spoken vernacular tongue.

Jalgaon district produces more than 16% of India's bananas and thus 3% of world banana production takes place in Jalgaon. Jalgaon thus produces more bananas than most of the countries of the world. According to Mahabanana, an association of banana growers of Maharashtra, 66% of Maharashtra's land under banana crop is in Jalgaon.

Jalgaon is also one of the world's largest pulse (beans/daals) milling centers. It has a few jewelry makers and is a leading cotton producing region.

Home to over 500 pharmacies, chemists and drugstores, Jalgaon has the highest number of pharmacies for a town of its size.[3]

Jalgaon is often known as the "Banana Capital" of India. Jalgaon has grown from being a small town to a regional trading hub. Jalgaon Municipal corporation is the administrative body for the city, which is housed in the 17 floor building which has become a landmark of the city.It is one of the tallest Municipal corporation buildings in India. Adjoining this is the Golani complex with more than 500 shops and flats. Crossing Mahatma Gandhi road towards the Shastri tower visitors will find Phule market, well known as a retail market for clothing, cosmetics, and almost all consumable items. Further along is another one of Jalgaon's important markets, known as Dana Bazaar. In December 2010, Jalgaon got its first state of the art shopping mall, Khandesh Central, in the heart of the city near Station Road. It contains 5.5 Lac Sq Ft of shopping, including Big Bazaar, INOX four screen multiplex, and various other stores, wholesale market for food grains. Next to it, after crossing Subhash chowk, visitors enter the market of Jewellery (Sarafa bazaar). Jalgaon is one of the biggest Jewellery markets in Maharashtra and famous for its Gold quality and designs therefore it's well known as 'Golden city'. Beside the jewelry market, is the construction, hardware and paints market (Bohri gully).[citation needed]

Cultural activities

Jalgaon has hosted a number of musical concerts. Artists like Hridaynath Mangeshkar, Zakir Hussain, Jagjit Singh, Vaishali Samant, Abhijeet Sawant, Amit Sana and Swapnil Bandodkar have performed at Jalgaon. An event by the name of Khandesh Festival took place from January 28 to 30, 2010. Various competitions were conducted during these three days which show the real Khandeshiness. Stalls of Khandeshi dishes were arranged at Sagar park. Top Indian music artists like Shreya Ghoshal, Avadhoot Gupte and Pankaj Udhas performed here.

Road

Jalgaon is well connected to many major cities of Maharashtra state, as well as some out-of-state, such as Mumbai, Nashik, Dhule (Dhulia), Nagpur, Durg, Raipur, and Kolkata through Asian Highway no. 46 (formerly National Highway no. 6).

Rail

Jalgaon railway station lies on the main railway line. Several trains like Karnataka Express, Punjab Mail, Navjeevan Express, Jabalpur Garibrath Express, etc. have a stop at Jalgaon. Recently some more express trains like Gitanjali Express, Goa Express and Sachakhand Express have also been provided with stoppage. Though an important city and a district place, many of the trains stop at Bhusawal due to operational convenience of Railways. Though this arrangement of providing stoppage to Bhusawal junction is of great inconvenience to commuters of Jalgaon. But the imperial structure set by the British is continuing till the date. Bhusawal railway junction, 25 kilometers away from Jalgaon city, is one of the major railway junctions in Maharashtra; connecting with New Delhi, Mumbai, Kolkata, Chennai, etc. Jalgaon is also to connect to a big western Indian city, Surat, by Tapti Rail line undergoing doubling.

Air

Jalgaon Airport, at Kusumba (approximately 6 km from the city) has been upgraded by the AAI and was inaugurated on 23 March 2012 by the President of India, Smt. Pratibha Patil.[4]

Local transport

A new bus service called "JMTU" was started by the Jalgaon Municipal Corporation on 15 August 2009. More than 10,000 people travel by the Ecobus daily. it is an economical bus service being operated by a private operator after paying some royalty to the Municipal corporation. When the services were started it was quite economic but subsequently within 5 months the fares were raised to considerable levels in the interest of the private operator.

Tourist attractions

"Swinging towers of Farkande(झुलते मनोरे)"

It is an uncommon yet the most precise work of engineering where when one tower is vibrated, the other vibrates automatically, while there is no physical supports for the working in between the two towers.

"Khoj Gandhiji Ki" Gandhi Teerth

Gandhi Teerth is located at Jain Hills, Jalgaon. This is located six kilometers away from main city on State Highway No. 184 towards Pachora. This is a state of the art museum, where you can see as well as experience Mahatma Gandhi's life and work. There are 25 different sections connecting one another, a unique example of art and multimedia coexistence. This is the only Mahatma Gandhi museum using audio guide facility in English, Hindi and Marathi. Gandhi Teerth has their own Archives section, where you can see more than 8000 books written by and about Gandhiji, more than 2 lac pages of digitized documents, 152 Audio speeches by Gandhiji, 85 documentaries and 116 countries original philatalic material on Gandhiji. These archives have the diaries of Mahadevbhai Desai, Manuben and more than 5000 issues of various weekly publications which were published by Gandhiji in India's freedom movement.

Ajanta Caves

The famous Ajanta Caves are 57 km from Jalgaon. Ajanta caves were carved by Buddhists.

Padmalaya

Padmalaya is a Ganesh temple considered as one of the 3.5 peeths. It is a temple with two statues of Ganesh (swayambu) which have trunks bending on right as well as on left. You can walk to Bheemkund- the place where Bheema killed Bakasura in Mahabharata. The Padmalaya has significant history from the Mahabharata. The place was first known as 'Ekchakranagari' but later on it was pronounced as Erandol.


Manudevi

Its place almost 30 km north of city, located in satpuda forest ranges, which has a local transportation till village Adgaon by MSRTC buses. From Adgaon you can hire richshaw. Alternately, people from village provide the service with bullock cart. Manudevi is kul-daiwat of almost 90% khandeshi people and everyone visits the place often. Best time to visit is during monsoon, it has a water fall of @ 60 Feet height, which is pleasant to see when it is raining. Water of the fall looks like milk and creates a pleasant environment around the temple. People come to visit the place from all over the country and few have visited from other country as well. After visiting Jalgaon, Manudevi is not a place to miss. People from Adgaon are supportive of visitors and they have formed a trust to support and help visitors.

Mehrun Lake

"Mehrun" is another famous spot in the district for its famous fruit 'Bor'. A fun park is located nearby the premises as well.Supposedly the name Jalgaon is inspired by Mehrun Lake, meaning of 'Jal' being water.Also "BHEL" is famous like Choupaty Bhel.[5]

Muktainagar

Muktainagar is a sacred place which was named after Muktabai, the younger sister of Jñāneśvar. The temple of Muktabai is in Kothali.

Pal Sanctuary

Pal is a small village situated in Raver taluka. Here, the beauty of the nature is breathtaking. It is located in Satpuda.

Unapdev : Hot water Spring

Unapdev located in foothills of Satpuda hills range, Unapdev is one of holy remote place at a distance of 2 km from Vardi village & 6 km from Adavad in Chopda taluka of Jalgaon District in Maharashtra state of India. Hot water fountain is one of the key attractions of Unapdev tourist place. This places have special mention in ancient holy 'Ramayana' and had auspicious touch of Lord Rama during his fourteen years expulsion from Ayodhya. Khandesh's deity Manudevi, Shiragad's Amba Bhavani Goddesses are other two sacred places in nearby Yaval Taluka. The word 'Un-ap' means hot water and in Khandesh's Ahirani language 'Vuna Dev' stands for the almighty that generated this fountain. The hot water flowing right throughout the year from the mouth of godly cow is another factor of attraction for tourist visiting this spot. This uniquely constant temperature hot water has healing effects for skin ailments. Accorfing to the ancient stories, "This hot water breeze was generated by Lord Rama for Sharbhang rishi having faced torments from evils."

North Maharashtra University is located in Jalgaon and has a jurisdiction over the entire Khandesh area which includes Jalgaon, Dhule and Nandurbar districts. There are many other schools and colleges in Jalgaon. Government Polytechnic and Engineering college are one of the premier institutes of Khandesh.

Gandhi Research Foundation, is located at Gandhi Teerth, Jain Hills, Jalgaon is the only Gandhi Study Center in the world, where you can get all the study material, authentic papers, photo, audio & video material on Gandhiji. Jalgaon is a collection and distribution center of agricultural goods and agriculture input industry (including biofertilizers). The leading products are jowar and raw cotton and banana; the region's rich volcanic soil is particularly well-suited to cotton production. Jalgaon is a center for cotton-textile and vegetable-oil mills, particularly groundnut-oil and hydrogenation plants. Jalgaon is also known for banana production. The city is known for its gold market which has a reputation of being pure. The Jalgaon city surrounded by various industries like irrigation, pipe, forging, cloths. Jalgaon is nowadays becoming a well trading centre of Maharashtra and a leading producer of sugarcane. The onion dehydration plant in Jalgaon has annual onion dehydration capacity of 10,000 tonnes, which is about 15 per cent of the total exports of dehydrated onions from India.[citation needed]

Pulses (Dalls) is one of the staple food in Indian cuisine. The Pulse industry caters to this need through various processes that clean, process and pack the Dall product. During the 1970s Pulse Milling Industries were setup by several companies who were pioneers in this field including JJ Group, Vinod Group of Industries, Salecha Industries and Adarsh Industries. Subsequently these companies paved the way for creating the World's largest milling center for Pulse products in Jalgaon with most plants processing very large quantities for Indian and world consumption. The plants employed over 10,000 workers directly and indirectly at its peak. The Jalgaon Pulse industry was the leader in export of Pulse products to over 25 countries worldwide and gained a reputation as the world's best millers. Most of the import trade of the raw pulses from Burma, Canada and Australia also happened through Jalgaon. Even commodity stock exchanges in India including NCDEX, MCEX quoted prices in terms of prevalent prices in Jalgaon. Though the industry faced a setback due to the ban of exports of pulses executed by Indian Agriculture Minister Sharad Pawar, it is still a thriving center for quality Pulse products.
